Glosmaths www.glosmaths.org mathematics@gloucestershire Numeracy is a proficiency which is developed mainly in mathematics but also in other subjects. It is more than an ability to do basic arithmetic. It involves developing confidence and competence with numbers and measures. It requires understanding of the number system, a repertoire of mathematical techniques, and an inclination and ability to solve quantitative or spatial problems in a range of contexts. Numeracy also demands understanding of the ways in which data are gathered by counting and measuring, and presented in graphs, diagrams, charts and tables. National Strategy documents

Glosmaths www.glosmaths.org mathematics@gloucestershire At the heart of numeracy is … Learn number facts so that they can recall them without hesitation. Use known facts to work out new facts Use understanding of the relationship between the four rules of number to work out answers and check results Use a variety of mental strategies to work out calculations Solve problems involving calculation

Glosmaths www.glosmaths.org mathematics@gloucestershire Numeracy is the basic skills of mathematics which are vital for the life opportunities of our children

Glosmaths www.glosmaths.org mathematics@gloucestershire ‘ Mathematics provides a powerful universal language and intellectual toolkit for abstraction, generalisation and synthesis. It is the language of science and technology. It enables us to probe the natural universe and to develop new technologies that have helped us control and master our environment, and change societal expectations and standards of living. Mathematical skills are highly valued and sought after. Mathematical training disciplines the mind, develops logical and critical reasoning and develops analytical and problem- solving skills to a high degree.’ Smith, 2004 Making Mathematics Count

Glosmaths www.glosmaths.org mathematics@gloucestershire The importance of mathematics 'Mathematical thinking is important for all members of a modern society as a habit of mind for its use in the workplace, business and finance; and for personal decision-making. Mathematics is fundamental to national prosperity in providing tools for understanding science, engineering, technology and economics. It is essential in public decision-making and for participation in the knowledge economy. Mathematics equips pupils with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse and change the world. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder for all pupils when they solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution, or notice hidden connections. Pupils who are functional in mathematics and financially capable are able to think independently in applied and abstract ways, and can reason, solve problems and assess risk. Mathematics is a creative discipline. The language of mathematics is international. The subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics has developed over time as a means of solving problems and also for its own sake.' Mathematics programme of study Qualifications and Curriculum Authority 2007

Glosmaths www.glosmaths.org mathematics@gloucestershire Mathematics makes a significant contribution to modern society; the basic skills of mathematics are vital for the life opportunities of our children; mathematics develops the mind and those highly valued cognitive skills.
