The Korean War was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea (supported by the UN) and North Korea (supported by the People’s Republic of China and the USSR). The war was a result of the physical division of Korea on two countries with different political regimes. The war began on the morning of 25 June 1950 and ended with an armistice agreement on the 27 th of July 1953. The total amount of casualties on both sides was around 2.5 million people.

The main cause of this war was the differences between the two newly divided countries. One of the causes was the Cold War, as the relations between the USA and the Soviet Union were very bad, and they still wanted to duel and see who is stronger. The US Army was made much more powerful and Stalin wanted another chance after losing the Berlin Wall, so this was their chance of proving who is better. The newly created United Nations wanted to prove that is was stronger than the League of Nations which would fail at such challenge.

The war began when North Korea invaded South Korea on the 25 th of June 1950. After some successes of N.K., the United Nations intervened and pushed North Korea to the Chinese Border. This alarmed the Chinese government which asked South Korea to back off. When this request was ignored, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army went on the side of North Korea until South Korea and the UN were pushed past the border.

In the beginning of 1951, neither army was in the other country and order was restored. Peace talks started happening. The new President of the USA visited Korea to learn what might end the Korean War. The United Nations accepted India’s proposed armistice to this war and fire ceased. The war ended on the 27 th of July 1953. It was a short war, but with many casualties and many changes in the 1950’s political sphere, some held until today.

Although they have officially signed an armistice, the Republic of Korea and North Korea are still two estranged countries with different political regimes and intolerance between each other. South Korea is today a modernised and industrialised country, while North Korea is still underdeveloped. It is still a communist country with lifetime leaders closed to the outer world with threats of nuclear war.

Other results of this war include: This was the United Nations’ first major success and proof for its strength. However, it was learned that although a human rights organisation, it could not win through peace talks and compromise, but only through violence. China and the USSR managed to increase their reputation. The Soviet Union finally got a chance to test their Air Force against the USA. However, the relations between these two countries got worse and they lost a lot of money in this war.
