2 Facts About Her Life Born on October 27, 1932 in Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts during the Great Depression. Her father was a biologist and beekeeper. The summer after her 3 rd year of college, she became guest editor at Mademoiselle magazine. During this time she was in New York. Made her first suicide attempt by crawling under her house and taking an overdose of sleeping pills. At a party she met the English poet Ted Hughes, she married on June 16, 1956 at St George the Martyr Holborn in the London Borough of Camden. In 1960, while in London, Plath published her first collection of poetry, The Colossus. Plath's marriage was full of difficulties, mostly surrounding her husbands affair with Assia Wevill, and they separated in late 1962. Plath committed suicide after she completely sealed the rooms of her house between herself and her sleeping children with wet towels. Plath then placed her head in the oven while the gas was turned on and the pilot light was not lit.
