2 BMayer@ChabotCollege.edu ChabotENGR_Cool_Engineering_Moreau_Counseling.ppt 2 Bruce Mayer, PE Chabot College Engineering California Needs Engineers boost by 50%  Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed an educational initiative that aims to boost by almost 50% the number of California-trained engineers during the next decade... 20,000 to 24,000 new engineers too few graduates to meet the demand forcivil, electronics, mechanical, aerospace and other industries  The goal of the Engineer Initiative is to bring 20,000 to 24,000 new engineers into the state's workforce. Even though the number of engineers in the state is expected to grow to 44,000 by 2014, there are too few graduates to meet the demand for civil, electronics, mechanical, aerospace and other industries, according to the state's Labor & Workforce Development Agency. 9 BMayer@ChabotCollege.edu ChabotENGR_Cool_Engineering_Moreau_Counseling.ppt 9 Bruce Mayer, PE Chabot College Engineering High School Prep for Engineering  Preparation for College or University Study of Engineering has Two Primary Components  Students Should Be Ready to Take during the First College Term 1.CALCULUS-I Mathematics (MATH-1) 2.English Composition/Writing (ENGL-1A)

10 BMayer@ChabotCollege.edu ChabotENGR_Cool_Engineering_Moreau_Counseling.ppt 10 Bruce Mayer, PE Chabot College Engineering MTH1 & ENGL1A at Chabot  MTH 1 - Calculus I (5 Units) Limits and continuity, differentiation of algebraic and trigonometric functions, the definite integral. Prerequisite: Mathematics 20 or an appropriate skill level demonstrated through the Mathematics assessment process. –http://www.chabotcollege.edu/academics/Outlines/Mathematics/ MATH1_F03.doc  ENGL 1A - Critical Reading & Composition (3 Units) Integrated approach to reading, writing, and critical thinking intended to develop ability to read and write complex, college-level prose. Examination of ideas in relation to individual's world view and contexts from which these ideas arise. Some research required. Prerequisite: English 101B, 102, or appropriate skill level demonstrated through English assessment process. –http://www.chabotcollege.edu/academics/Outlines/English/ ENGL1A_F03.doc

17 BMayer@ChabotCollege.edu ChabotENGR_Cool_Engineering_Moreau_Counseling.ppt 17 Bruce Mayer, PE Chabot College Engineering Why Chabot College?  1 Big Reason; Several Smaller ones  Biggest Reason → As GOOD, or Even BETTER, Instruction For Lower Division CourseWork (1st Two College Years) Applies to ALL Academic Disciplines –e.g., Math, Science, English, History, etc.

18 BMayer@ChabotCollege.edu ChabotENGR_Cool_Engineering_Moreau_Counseling.ppt 18 Bruce Mayer, PE Chabot College Engineering Why Community College? Cont.  Other Reasons Reduced Cost (see next Slides) Smaller Class Sizes More Personal Atmosphere Enhanced Support Services Generally More Convenient Much Greater Flexibility –UC’s Often have “progress” Requirements  To Take Fewer Than 12 Units May Require a Special Waiver

19 BMayer@ChabotCollege.edu ChabotENGR_Cool_Engineering_Moreau_Counseling.ppt 19 Bruce Mayer, PE Chabot College Engineering Instructional Effectiveness  UC Berkeley CoE  UC DAVIS CoE  ClassRoom Performance At UCBerkeley Per R. Giomi, Asst. Dean At College of Engineering, Fall03 –Grades Earned for 3rd & 4th Year Students are Statistically INDISTINGUISHABLE Between Native & Transfer Students
