5 HOW DO WE DEFINE HUMANITIES? o Those branches of knowledge that concern themselves with human beings and their culture. o Distinguished in content and method from the physical and biological sciences and, somewhat parallel to the social sciences. o Often placed in comparison to more “practical” studies, which are designed primarily to help us make a living. HUMANITIES X CULTURE o Humanities is the catalyst for the creation of culture. o Culture combines life experience and learned behavior. o We learn culture through humanities and environment. EXPRESSION HUMANITIES + CULTURE = EXPRESSION o The humans express themselves through the humanities and culture o The way we speak, sing, dress, think, and even the way we eat is influenced by humanities and culture.
