1 Chapter 01: European Settlement of North America SSUSH1The student will describe European settlement in North America during the 17th century. SSUSH2 The student will trace the ways that the economy and society of British North America developed. SSUSH3The student will explain the primary causes of the American Revolution. 2 Atlantic Slave Trade Trade that involved European nations bringing black slaves from Africa and selling them in the Americas.  Dutch, British, Spanish, and French

3 Middle Passage Over-ocean route traveled by slaves from Africa to the Americas.

4 Triangular Trade Route Trade between three points: Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

5 African Culture Africans came from many different cultures and a variety of backgrounds within Africa. They often spoke different languages, had different religious beliefs, and held different traditions.

6 Maroon Settlements Communities formed in frontier areas by escaped slaves.

7 Social Mobility Ability of someone to move from one social status to another through hard work, etc.

8 Universal Suffrage All white males were allowed to vote, rather than just upper class landowners.

9 Democracy The people electing whomever they wish to serve in public office, rather than simply those from a select ruling class.

10 Benjamin Franklin Great inventor, scientist, ambassador, writer, and U.S. founding father that was also an example of individualism and social mobility in the colonies.

11 First Great Awakening A religious movement that featured passionate preaching from evangelists who believed that colonists needed to be called back to sincere Christian commitment. It helped establish separation of church and state as a valued colonial principle.

12 Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield These ministers who promoted the First Great Awakening.

13 Revivals Services where traveling preachers would speak.

14 Importing Buying goods from other nations.

15 Exporting Selling goods to other nations.

16 Mercantilism Theory common in the colonial period which taught that countries needed to export more goods than they imported in order to gain wealth and remain secure.
