2 The National Animal of India The national animal of India is the Tiger Indian tigers are famous all over the world and one of the main attractions for the lovers of wild life. They are the crowning glory and the light of the Indian wild life.

3 The Tiger The Tiger is slowly becoming an endangered species in India. Unfortunately due to negligence of authorities and poaching, the tiger population of India is decreasing at an alarming rate. In fact, some of the tiger reserves do not have any tigers at all.

4 The National Bird of India The national bird of India is the Peacock. The significance of the peacock is attached to many different cultures of India.

5 The Peacock In India people believe that whenever the Peacock spreads its tails in an ornamental fashion, it indicates that rain is imminent. In a way it is partly true. At the sight of dark clouds the bird outspreads its tail and starts dancing in rhythmic fashion.

6 The Elephant The elephant is another important animal of India. Indian Elephants are regarded in most parts of the country as not just an animal but also as an extension of the Indian culture.

7 The Elephant An immensely important part of Hinduism, India’s dominant religion, the Indian Elephant is worshipped in many parts of the country, as an incarnation of Ganesha, The Elephant God. Historically too, Elephants have played a very important role in the country, often being regarded as an important indicator of an individual’s social and economic status.

8 The Elephant Today, however these majestic creatures face a serious threat to their existence, being an easy target for poachers who, influenced by the greed of ivory in the form of the tusks of elephants indulge in inhumane mutilation of these innocent beings. The government of India has to a large extent curbed the threat of extinction that these creatures faced by establishing a number of legal acts by which the life of these creatures have been made secure.

9 The Sacred Cow The cow remains a protected animal in Hinduism today and Hindus do not eat beef. Most rural Indian families have at least one dairy cow, a gentle spirit who is often treated as a member of the family.

10 The Sacred Cow There are five products of the cow : milk milk curds curds ghee butter ghee butter urine and dung urine and dung These products are called Pancagavya and these are all used in Puja - which means worship.

12 The Sacred Cow Despite their sacred status, cows don't seem very appreciated in India. Visitors are often surprised to see them walking neglected around city streets, living on garbage from the gutters. But the cow is honored at least once a year, on Gopastami. On this "Cow Holiday," cows are washed and decorated in the temple and given offerings in the hope that her gifts of life will continue.
