University of Louisville IMPACT Architecture Team Glen Prater, Jr., Associate Professor Ellen G. Brehob, Assistant Professor Michael L. Day, Professor J.B. Speed Scientific School University of Louisville Louisville, KY 40292 January 25, 2000 Architecture Group Activity Report December 9, 1999 – January 24, 2000

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 2/14 1.Perform a comprehensive architecture technology review; identify architecture opportunities. 2.Develop and validate a simplified comprehensive chassis/body model suitable for the assessment of general architecture concepts. 3.Specify an assessment methodology for use with the simplified architecture model. 4.Document results. Architecture Group Phase I Tasks

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 3/14 Architecture Group Phase II Tasks Cab to front-end structure attachment, welded versus bolt-on assembly Body-on-frame architecture versus unitized-body and integrated cab-box architectures Pick-up box architecture Alternate frame configurations Ford-specified architecture study 1(e.g., bumper architecture) Ford-specified architecture study 2 1.Modify the baseline simplified model and use it for specific architecture studies: 2.Perform independent verification and validation (IVV) of architec- ture related technical results from IMPACT external work groups. 3.Document results.

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 4/14 Complete component/subsystem outline for Phase II simplified models (not completed). Review Ford experience with developing, using, and interpreting simplified models. Develop simplified model for a representative component. Complete specification of architecture metrics suite (not completed). Formalize architecture concept documentation standards and assessment process (some progress). Proceed with assessment and prioritization of group- generated architecture concepts. Support Phase II technical tasks. Technical Work Planned, 12/9-1/24

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 5/14 Continue search for technical staff; make one GRA and post doc position offer by January 7. Contribute to UL press release for Sen. Mitch McConnell. Respond to local publicity requests for about UL IMPACT participation. Make arrangements to transport and receive a tear-down vehicle for use at the University of Louisville. Administrative Work Planned, 12/9-1/24

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 6/14 Met 1/6/00 with P. Geck, M. Zebrowski, J. Brevick, C. Wu, et. al., and reviewed concept model capabilities and limitations. Identified sources for Ford documentation and software for model development and refinement. Outlined an IMPACT concept model plan consistent with the Architecture Group Phase II work plan. Selected SDRC Ideas and MSC Nastran, as primary modeling and computational packages. Developed beam-element models for F-150 and HMMWV frame components. Assigned a graduate student (N. Barnes) to begin development of concept model for frame and box components. Attended 1/1/00 Body Structures PMT Value Engineering meeting (functional analysis). Participated in BS PMT conference calls on 12/15, 1/11, 1/14. Technical Work Completed, 12/9-1/24

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 7/14 Met January 18 with two members of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s staff: Billy Piper, Senior Legislative Assistant Office of Sen. Mitch McConnell 361-A Russell Senate Office Bldg. Washington, DC 20510 Billy_Piper@mcconnell.senate.gov Larry E. Cox, State Director Sen. Mitch McConnell Gene Snyder US Courthouse 601 W. Broadway, Rm 630 Louisville, Ky 40202 Larry_Cox@mcconnell.senate.gov Administrative Work Completed, 12/9-1/24

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 8/14 …Responded to questions from Piper and Cox about project timing, UL technical work plan, benefits to UL research mission, difference between Phase II and Phase III activities, fundamental project objectives, possibility of including Ft. Knox in the test program, and potential for eventual production at KTP. Responded to information request from a Kentucky professional engineering publication about IMPACT project. Worked with Milind Baviskar to identify a vehicle to disassemble at the University in support of concept model development. Uploaded Architecture Group files to IMPACT project web site. Selected hardware/software needed for concept model development. Received price quotes. Administrative Work Completed, 12/9-1/24

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 9/14 Experienced difficulty in locating Ford concept model documentation. Lack of contract prevented computer hardware/software purchases, position offers. Teaching obligations prevented participation in M-W-F Body Structures value engineering conference calls. Problems Encountered, 12/9-1/24

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 10/14 Web Site Layout

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 11/14 Architecture Group Phase I Tasks, Schedule, Responsibilities, and Progress

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 12/14 Review and disseminate concept modeling documentation. Download Ford software components used for development and refinement of concept models. Develop concept model representations for frame components; assess model for accuracy and ease of modification. Continue with specification of architecture metrics suite. Proceed with assessment and prioritization of group-generated architecture concepts. Technical Work Planned, 1/25-2/21

January 25, 2000IMPACT Architecture GroupSlide 13/14 Hire one graduate research assistant and one post doctoral research associate. Continue reviewing applications for research faculty position. Place order for MSC NASTRAN licenses and HP workstations. Respond to local publicity requests for about UL IMPACT participation. Make arrangements to transport and receive tear-down vehicle. Administrative Work Planned, 1/25-2/21
