3 The Everyday Life of Jesus Through the experiences and events of everyday life, Jesus teaches us about –God Relationship with God –The Kingdom of God –Discipleship Appropriate response to God’s offer of the Kingdom Relationship with other people

4 The Everyday Life of Jesus The Call of the First Disciples (Mark 1: 16-20; Luke 5: 1-11; Matthew 4: 18-22; John 1: 35-51) –Jesus “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew Fisherman  “casting a net into the sea” “At once they left their nets and followed him.” –James and his brother John (the sons of Zebedee) Fisherman  “in a boat... mending their nets” “Immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.”

Feel weird and strange; confusion, doubt, questioning Say “No!” –So, why do these two sets of brothers drop everything and follow Jesus? Jesus –Possesses some quality that is attractive and alluring and enables them to trust him »Friendly, hospitable, peaceful, calm, energetic, charismatic The brothers (the first disciples) –Possess a desire and willingness to grow in faith and strengthen their relationship with God –Searching for a new life

7 The Everyday Life of Jesus The Call of the First Disciples (Mark 1: 16-20; Luke 5: 1-11; Matthew 4: 18-22; John 1: 35-51) –Have you ever felt “called” to follow Jesus? If not, please consider the possibility of your openness to hearing this “call”? Are you really listening to God and the possibility that God is “calling” out to you in a unique way? –How did/would you respond to this “call”? Would you drop everything (family, friends, job, employment, comfort, safety, security, your whole way of life) and follow Jesus like the disciples? Are you willing to trust God with your life and everything that you hold dear?

8 The Everyday Life of Jesus The Call of Matthew/Levi (Mark 2: 13-17; Luke 5:27-32; Matthew 9: 9-13) –Jesus “Follow me.” –Strong but peaceful presence –Very persuasive –Matthew/Levi Tax collector sitting at a customs post at the edge (margins) of the town limits “He got up and followed him.” –Displays great trust in a stranger by walking away from his job (wealth, comfort, safety, security) and way of life

I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

11 The Everyday Life of Jesus The Cleansing of the Temple (Mark 11:15- 19; Luke 19:45-48; Matthew 21:12-17; John 2: 13-25) –“Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all those engaged in selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.” –What characteristics and feelings does Jesus express in this incident? Anger Angry, mad, upset, disappointment
