5 Courses Transition Year will be offered subject to teaching resources being available and sufficient numbers. 1 class group of 24 places If oversubscribed an open draw done publicly Once the TY class is finalised then all make subject choice.

6 Courses continued Once you put your name down for TY you will not be entered in the process to make bands for subjects in 5 th year. TY suits students who are not unsettled in school, who do not find attendance difficult, who can work in groups or independently, who have the maturity to focus on their work…

7 LCVP LEAVING CERT VOCATIONAL PROGRAMME An enhanced Leaving Certificate. Requirements for the LCVP are as follows: – LCVP students must take a minimum of five Leaving Cert subjects including Irish – Two of the above must be selected from one of the designated Vocational Subject Groupings – Must study the two Link Modules, namely Preperation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education – Students are required to follow a recognised course in a Modern European Language( other than Irish or English).

8 VOCATIONAL SUBJECT GROUPINGS In order to qualify for LCVP, a student must have two linked subject combinations: 1. Construction Studies(C.S) or Engineering( ENG) or DGC (any two) 2. Physics and C.S or ENG 3. Ag Science and C.S or ENG 4. Ag Science and Chemistry or Physics 5. Home Economics and Ag Science or Biology 6. Home Economics and Art 7. Accounting and Business 8. Physics and Chemistry 9. Biology and Chemistry or Physics

10 Assessment for LCVP At a common level Takes two forms:  Portfolio of Coursework(60%)  Terminal Examination Paper (40%) Points awarded for H.E.I. 70 Distinction 50 Merit 30 Pass

11 GUIDELINES FOR SUBJECT CHOICE 3 CORE SUBJECTS: IRISH, ENGLISH, MATHS 4 SELECTED SUBJECTS (Bands)

12 STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL SUBJECT CHOICE 1. Don’t pick subjects that friends are doing 2. Pick subjects that are relevant to your choice of career. 3. No subjects are specifically designed for boys or girls. 4. Keep options open when selecting. If unsure of career choice – select one subject from different subject groupings. If sure, select two subjects from one group. 5. There should be continuity from Junior Certificate to Senior Certificate. 6. Check out subject requirements for 3 rd level.

13 STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SUBJECT CHOICE CONT. 7. Remaining subjects should be selected from those which will maximise students’ points and in which students have an interest. 8. Students should enjoy and participate fully in the subjects they have chosen. 9. Speak to subject teachers who will explain about course structure and content. 10. Talk to fellow senior students- borrow some notes and textbooks to see what lies ahead!
