2 Economic and Social Data Service provides access and support for key economic and social data distributed service, bringing together centres of expertise in data creation, dissemination, preservation and use core archiving services plus four specialist data services

3 ESDS Longitudinal Joint enterprise: UK Data Archive (UKDA) UK Longitudinal Studies Centre (ULSC) based at ISER supports a range of longitudinal data collections but seven ‘core’ collections in particular: National Child Development Study (NCDS) 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70) Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) Families and Children Study (FACS) Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (LSYPE)

6 Data not held by the ESDS The LSYPE data can be linked to three administrative (non- survey) data files using the SURVEYID variable: –National Pupil Database includes data on pupils’ attainment at KS2, KS 3 and KS 4 and data about the pupil such as free school meal eligibility and SEN status. (N.B. ESDS makes available a ‘reduced’ version of the NPD). –School Level Data contains information about the school each sample member attended at the sampling stage. –Geographical Data data from the National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) have been linked by postcode. Researchers requiring access to these data should contact DCSF directly, completing the application form from Appendix D of the user guide.

7 Documentation A variety of LSYPE documentation is available, including: user guide/technical report –inc. survey design, response, fieldwork, weighting etc. documentation for each wave –inc. questionnaires, showcards, derived variable specs

8 Retrieval and access web access, via ESDS site, to data and metadata documentation (user guide, questionnaires) freely available to any ESDS user (registered or unregistered) data can be browsed and frequencies run by any user (registered or unregistered) using Nesstar full datasets are freely available for download for the majority of our registered users data supplied in a variety of formats –SPSS –Stata –tab-delimited text

9 Online access for registered users Registered users can: download full datasets order data via online order system browse/analyse/download data in Nesstar To register: login via UK Federation click-through or sign/return data access agreement (legal undertaking) (to access data) register a usage (formerly a project)
