3 After the quiz, discuss in small groups: 1)How assertive are you? 2)In what situations do need to be more assertive? 3)In what situations do you need to be less aggressive? 4)In what situations do you need to be less passive? 5)Does you level of assertiveness change with your different relationships (parents, teachers, friends)? 6) Discuss an example of a situation where being an assertive communicator has been beneficial? We will now briefly review the three types of communication

4  Style:  Closed minded, poor listener, interrupts, and has difficulty seeing others point of view.  Behavior:  Puts others down, doesn’t ever think they are wrong, know-it-all attitude.  Verbal Cues:  “You must”, “You should”  “Don’t ask why, just do it”  Effects:  Provokes counter-aggression, alienation from others

5  Style:  Indirect, hesitant  Always agrees, doesn’t speak up  Behavior:  Tries to sit on both sides of the fence to avoid conflict  Ask permission unnecessarily  Lets others make choices  Agree externally, while disagreeing internally  Verbal Cues:  “You should do it”  “This is probably wrong, but…”  Effects:  Gives up being him or herself  Slowly loses self esteem

6  Style:  Effective, active listener  States limits, expectations  Expresses self directly, honestly and as soon as possible about feelings and wants  Behavior:  Knows what is needed and develops a plan to get it  Realistic in expectations  Consistent and fair  Verbal Cues:  “What are my options?”  “What alternatives do we have?”  Effects:  Increase self esteemed of self and others  Others know where they stand

8 Verbal communication with your teachers, counselors, and administration Greet them (Hi Ms. Doyle, how are you today?) Ask if they have time to talk or if you can schedule an appointment. (Don’t always assume they have time right then and there) Express your concerns or questions in an polite and appropriate manner. Pay attention to your own non-verbal communication. (Smile, stand-up straight, look them in the eye) Thank them for their help.
