4. Darkroom Knowledge You should have already completed part one: Enlarger Set Up

5. Now for Part Two

6. You need 50 minutes to do this activity!

7. You cannot start it one day… then finish it later

9. Pre-Darkroom Activities Cleaning Negatives… ONLY with special negative cleaner and cotton pads !

10. Pre-Darkroom Activities NEVER use paper towels to clean your negative… or rub it on your shirt. You will scratch the dickens out of your negative.

11. Quickly Set Up your enlarger to make an enlargement of your negative. The size is up to you, but it must be Portrait Orientation.

12. Once you are sure of your set-up….. Don’t move anything !

13. Close down the f-stop to 2-clicks The smaller the opening, the better the focus !

14. Change Timer to the “T” Position Lamp will turn off and is now in “timer” mode.

16. Set the Timer to 5 seconds

18. Safe Lights Only !!! Photo Paper Cut to size For the “test strip”, it does not need to be the full size of the finished print….

19. Safe Lights Only !!! Photo Paper But make it big enough that it will include important parts of your photo… like the face !

20. Safe Lights Only !!! Photo Paper You will place it with the EMULSION up on the easel. (That means “shinny side” up)

21. Tape Down Photo Paper Emulsion Up (that means shinny side up)

22. Close the frame on the easel

23. Test Strip First Exposure Use your film envelope to block 4/5 of the paper…. Only the top 1/5 will be exposed.

24. Press Timer Button Lamp will go on, then turn off after Five Seconds.

25. Test Strip First Exposure 5 seconds

26. Test Strip Second Exposure Slide down the envelope so that 2/5 of the paper will be exposed…..

27. Press Timer Button Lamp will go on, then turn off after Five Seconds.

28. Test Strip Second Exposure 10 seconds 5 seconds

29. Test Strip Third Exposure Slide the envelope down so that 3/5 of the paper will be exposed….

30. Press Timer Button Lamp will go on, then turn off after Five Seconds.

31. Test Strip Third Exposure 15 seconds 10 seconds 5 seconds

32. Test Strip Fourth Exposure Slide the envelope down so that 4/5 of the photo paper will be exposed….

33. Press Timer Button Lamp will go on, then turn off after Five Seconds.

34. Test Strip Fourth Exposure 20 seconds 15 seconds 10 seconds 5 seconds

35. Test Strip Fifth Exposure Remove the envelope so that the entire strip of photo paper will be exposed…..

36. Press Timer Button Lamp will go on, then turn off after Five Seconds.

37. Test Strip Fifth Exposure 25 seconds 20 seconds 15 seconds 10 seconds 5 seconds

38. Begin the Development Process The exposure is done. We will now develop the photo paper using the same procedure as we did for the contact print and the PhotoGram !

39. the Development Process Developer 2 minutes (constant agitation) Stop Bath 20 seconds (constant agitation) Fixer 5 minutes (2 min for test strip) Orbit Bath 5 minutes (1 min for test strip) Wash 5 minutes (1 min for test strip)

40. Squeegee Carefully squeegee off as much water as you can. One or two passes is all it takes. Be very careful not to scratch your print.

41. Under normal lighting, look at your developed test strip….. Which of the five exposures will you use? Inspection

43. If none of the five are usable, you will need to make another test strip and adjust your exposure times ! Inspection

44. Which One is Best ? 15 sec is not quite dark enough…. 20 sec is too dark

45. So you decide on 18 seconds

46. Show the Test Strip to the teacher. Discuss with him the exposure time you will use.

47. You must get permission from the teacher before you make the final print… Or you will have to redo this project.

48. Set the Timer to your selected exposure time (In this example, we set the timer to 18 seconds ! )

49. Put some new photo paper into the easel. It now needs to be the full size of the finished enlargement

50. It now needs to be bigger than the opening in the easel so that you will have a nice white border on all four sides of the enlargement.

51. Expose the paper for the time selected from your test strip…. Then develop as normal.

52. Your Final Print  Should be in Sharp Focus  Have full tonal range  Be free of scratches /dust  Have a 1/4” white border

53. Show your Final Print To the teacher along with the test strip you made earlier this class period.

54. Don’t forget to take your Negative !

55. That’s it ! If you follow directions, you will be quite successful.

56. One more thing…….

57. Why can’t I make my test strip on Monday…. Then make my final print on Tuesday ?

58. The enlargers are all different !

59. Even if the enlargers look alike…. The light bulbs are different ages and usage

60. The electricity is different every day !

61. Other people are using that enlarger, so your magnification will not be consistent.

62. The chemicals are different strengths everyday.

63. The temperature is different everyday. The warmer it is, the faster the development process

64. So…. The test strip must be made the same day & class period as the final print !
