11 Transfer of Skills and Responsibility VCT Instructional Design Workshop, Kingston, Jamaica, 2-6 October 2006 Overall goal: to develop the draft of a training manual that would help to improve and maintain an optimum quality of VCT services in the Caribbean. Method: Participatory learning Training conducted by six Master Trainers from the region, who had been previously trained by JHPIEGO

13 Significant Developments HIV Training for Dental Practitioners Workshops: Suriname, Guyana, St. Lucia Publication of handbook, HIV/AIDS in Dental Practice, edited by Prof. S. Prabhu (Book launch in JA September 2006) Imminent adaptation of this handbook for use by dental practitioners in India

14 Significant Developments HIV Training for Caribbean Pharmacists The Caribbean Association of Pharmacists (CAP) Declared its commitment to improving Pharmaceutical care of persons living with HIV Formed a working alliance with the CHART RCU The RCU supported participation of pharmacists in regional meetings organized by CAP at which HIV training was done Rational procurement, Jamaica, March 200 Meetings held in St Kitts and Jamaica

15 Significant Developments CHART/CDC GAP/I-TECH Caribbean Training Integration Workshop, Barbados, November 2006 Focus on developing/clarifying/producing national training plans 33 participants from 15 Caribbean countries; including CHART National Training Coordinators; OECS Training Coordinator; staff from Belize, Guyana, Haiti MoH, Trinidad & Tobago

17 The CHART/I-TECH Link Continued to be the main channel for financing the units of the CHART Network (except Haitian Centres) Sponsored CHART Staff to I-TECH International Conference on Mentorship Contributed to the CHART Study Tour of Southern Africa (with Merck, Inc., Global Fund and UN PAF) Gave scholarships to 15 Caribbean nationals to attend Principles of STI Research course at UW I-TECH

18 The CHART/I-TECH Link Provided technical assistance in the following areas: Organizational development Strategic planning Curriculum and materials development (Training Tools) Updating of Caribbean Clinical Care Guidelines Monitoring and Evaluation Training in PMTCT, STI treatment, use of ARVs Development of a Caribbean Nursing Initiative I-TECH

19 The CHART/I-TECH Link Hosted separate retreats for NC and RCU Staff Concluded support to the CHART Centres in Haiti, but strengthened support to some other aspects of the Haitian HIV programme I-TECH

20 The CHART RCU and the OECS Between January and June 2006, the CHART RCU completed a contract with the Harvard Medical School Division of AIDS on behalf of the OECS HIV/AIDS Project Unit (Before this, the arrangement was maintained on behalf of the Secretariat of the OECS Regional Coordinating Mechanism)

21 The CHART RCU and the OECS Harvard Medical School Division of AIDS (subcontracted by the RCU); hired Dr Julianne Steel-Duncan (Paediatrician with experience in HIV/AIDS clinical care) Ms. Linda Marc, Registered Nurse These two field staff worked in 6 OECS Countries conducted training activities helped with preparation of HIV care guidelines and protocols

22 HMSDAIDS in the OECS: Aug 2005 - June 2006 259 Individuals trained Range 2-103 per country 18 workshops/group trainings at work places 360 episodes of individual training 85 preceptorship-type 275 didactic sessions

23 HMSDAIDS in the OECS: Aug 2005 - June 2006 Guidelines and/or protocols developed/improved in 5 of 6 countries Topics covered in training sessions: Antiretroviral management in adults and children Prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections Post exposure prophylaxis Partner counselling and notification Adherence and stigma reduction training (pilot)
