WMO 4.2 A review of other data models that could be adopted for use with weather radar data exchange CBS/OPAG-IOS Workshop on Radar Data Exchange Exeter, UK, 24-26 April 2013 Daniel Michelson, SMHI, Sweden

WMO What is “other”? Formats endorsed by WMO, from CBS-XIV (2009): “BUFR, CREX, XML, netCDF, HDF, including BUFR/CREX/GRIB tables” Therefore, logic has it that “other” = anything else. Note, however, that file format and information model have been lumped together once again. For example: TITAN (see 3.3)

WMO Metadata model(s) Aviation XML – METCE  WMO task coordinated by Enrico Fucile, ECMWF  An orthodox umbrella data model for application to aviation messages.  A framework containing logical data model that can then be implemented in different file-format encodings.  Applies ISO/TC 211 including GML.  UML to formulate the Observation & Measurement model, and heavy use of XML to represent it.

WMO Aviation XML – METCE (continued)  First AvXML version 1.0RC of the model, under review, to be adopted mid-2013.  Then METCE ends… WxR could support the idea of a WMO Task Team on Weather Radar Data Model that bases its work on METCE, elaborating it if such an approach is determined to offer an appropriate means of addressing and achieving a coherent global solution for weather radar data.

WMO Geography Markup Language (GML)  Already global de facto standard.  Widespread, e.g. Open Geospatial Consortium software.  Probably not realistic alternative for weather radar.

WMO File-format encodings  XML  GeoTIFF  PNG  GIF  Proprietary (radar industry)  In-house  McIdas  CSV
