The purpose of the project was to assist Turkey in the water management in accordance with the EU water legislation, in particular the WFD (2000/60/EC), Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD 91/271/EEC) and Dangerous Substances Directive (DSD 76/464/EEC) and daughter directives in order to reinforce Turkey’s accession to EU and thus provide support to the water sector. 29. The overall objective of the project is to achieve a good environmental status for surface waters. Strengthening Turkey’s capacity to implement the EU Water Framework Directive Project began it’s activities on January 2010, and project will be finalized at the first quarter of 2013.

This Project;  will enhance the harmonization of environmental Acquis Communautaire, especially for WFD with regarding to surface waters,  will be a good instrument for the preparation of plans and programmes for the National Policy,  will make the supervision system more effective,  will constitute a good model for Turkey’s other basins and also neighboring countries in terms of the objectives of integrated and holistic approach;  will enable better environmental protection and management. Assumed Results of Project:  The legal and institutional gap analysis is executed between Turkey and EU in terms of WFD requirements.  Capacity building of related institutions is provided on water quality monitoring, analysis and assessment of surface water bodies in line with WFD  Pilot implementation is executed related to monitoring of surface water bodies for selected basins.
