Problem of the Day From 4:00 to 5:30, Carlos, Lisa, and Toni took turns playing the same computer game. Carlos played for hour, and Lisa played for hour. For how many minutes did Toni play the game? 3 4 ___ 1 2 15 minutes

BELLWORK – 11SEPT2013 WRITE EACH FRACTION AS A DECIMAL (STOP AT 3 PLACES, IF NEEDED) red.4/5 white.3/2 blue.7/8 This day is dedicated to the men, women and children who loss their lives on this day 12 years ago.

BELLWORK – 12SEPT2013 WRITE EACH FRACTION AS A DECIMAL (STOP AT 3 PLACES, IF NEEDED) 1.4/5 2.1/9 3.1 2/3 4.3 3/5 0.80.111 1.66 3.60

BELLWORK – 13SEPT2013 Find the missing number that makes the fraction equivalent. 1. 2. 3.4. 9 8 15 3 5 __ 15 = 3 4 __ 20 = 2 3 __ ___ 12 = 5 8 __ 24 = 15

MA.6.A.5.2 We will compare and order fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, and improper fractions and find their locations on a number line. Also MA.6.A.5.1 Sunshine State Standards

Vocabulary like fractions unlike fractions common denominator

When you are comparing fractions, first check their denominators. When fractions have the same denominator, they are called like fractions. For example, and are like fractions. When two fractions have different denominators, they are called unlike fractions. For example, and are unlike fractions. 6 7 ___ 4 7 7 10 ___ 1 2

Additional Example 1A: Comparing Fractions Compare. Write, or =. 6 7 __ 4 7 6 7 7 4 > From the model, >. 6 7 __ 7 4

Additional Example 1B: Comparing Fractions Compare. Write, or =. 1 9 __ 5 9 1 9 9 5 < From the model, <. 1 9 __ 9 5

Check It Out: Example 1A Compare. Write, or =. 4 6 __ 5 6 4 6 6 5 <

Check It Out: Example 1B Compare. Write, or =. 9 15 __ 2 5 9 15 __ 5 2 >

Check It Out: Example 1C Compare. Write, or =. 2 5 __ 4 5 2 5 5 4 <

Check It Out: Example 1D Compare. Write, or =. 1 3 __ 9 27 1 3 __ 27 9 =

To compare unlike fractions without models, first rename the fractions so they have the same denominator. This is called finding a common denominator. This method can be used to compare mixed numbers as well.

Additional Example 2: Cooking Application 2 3 __ 3 4 Compare and. 2 3 __ 3 4 Find a common denominator by multiplying the denominators. 3 4 = 12 Ray has cup of nuts. He needs cup to make cookies. Does he have enough nuts for the recipe?

Additional Example 2 Continued Find equivalent fractions with 12 as the denominator. 2 3 __ 12 __ = 2 3 ______ 4 = 4 __ 12 8 3 4 __ 12 __ = 3 4 ______ 3 3 __ 12 9 2 3 __ 3 4 12 8 = = = __ 12 9

Additional Example 2 Continued Compare the like fractions. __ 12 8 __ 12 92 3 __ 3 4 <, so <. Since cup is less than cup, he does not have enough. 2 3 __ 3 4

Check It Out: Example 2A 1 3 __ 1 4 Trevor has cup of soil. He needs cup to fill a small planter. Does he have enough soil to fill the planter? __ 3 13 12 __ = ; = ; __ 12 4 __ 4 1 3 1 > 4 1 so Trevor has enough soil to fill the planter.

Check It Out: Example 2B Natalie lives mile from school. Peter lives mile from school. Who lives closer to the school? __ 6 1 10 3 __ 6 1 18 60 __ = ; = ;, __ 10 3 __ 6 1 < 10 3 so Natalie lives closer to the school. ___ 60 10

Additional Example 3: Ordering Fractions Order,, and from least to greatest. 4 5 __ 4 5 _______ 2 3 __ 2 3 _______ 1 3 3 3 5 5 5 5 10 15 __ 12 15 __ = = = 5 15 __ Rename with like denominators. 1 3 __ 1 3 2 3 The fractions in order from least to greatest are,,. 4 5 __ 5 15 1 3 10 15 2 3 0 1 12 15 4 5

Numbers increase in value as you move from left to right on a number line. Remember!

Check It Out: Example 3A Order,, and from least to greatest. 4 7 __ 3 4 1 4 4 7 = 16 28 ___ 4 7 __ ; 3 4 _ 21 28 ___ 1 4 __ 7 28 __ 7 28 __ 3 4 4 7 1 4 21 28 ___ 16 28 __ = ; = < <, so,,

Check It Out: Example 3B Order,, and from least to greatest. 1 5 __ 7 8 4 5 1 5 = 8 40 ___ ; 7 8 _ 35 40 ___ 4 5 __ 32 40 __ 8 40 __ 7 8 4 5 1 5 35 40 ___ 32 40 __ = ; = < <, so,,

Check It Out: Example 3C Order,, and from least to greatest. 2 3 __ 1 6 2 5 2 3 = 20 30 ___ ; 1 6 __ 5 30 ___ 2 5 __ 12 30 __ 5 30 __ 2 3 2 5 1 6 20 30 ___ 12 30 __ = ; = < <, so,,.
