Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) Journal Entry: A race is an investigation. Using the videos and your knowledge of how races are set up, in a short paragraph: a)Describe at least (3) variables that stay the same for all the contestants during a race. b)Why are these variables the same for all the contestants?

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) Key terms: 1)Controlled Experiment: a fair experiment, because all the variables that are not being tested stay the SAME. The ONLY variable you manipulate/choose to change is the independent variable. 2) Bias: unfair; prejudice.

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) Independent Variable Dependent Variable Constant/Control Variables -Variable that I choose to change because I’m testing it. - The “if” part of your hypothesis -The variable that I measure. The response. -The “then” part of the hypothesis. - The variables that I keep the SAME. This keeps the experiment fair.

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) Rule to setting up a controlled experiment You only choose 1 variable (the independent variable) to manipulate (change) when designing a fair controlled experiment!!! ALL OTHER VARIABLES ARE KEPT CONSTANT (SAME)

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) Task: Practice identifying the independent variable, dependent variable, and constant variables. Based on each investigation question, determine which variable should be the independent variable, the dependent variable, and a constant variable by placing a check in the box. (only check one box for each question)

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) Example: (from “Super-Size Me” Video” How does the type of food affect how fast it spoils? Variable Independ. Depend. Constant 1)Type of container [ ] [ ][ ] 2)Time in container [ ] [ ][ ] 3)Room food was in [ ] [ ][ ] 4)Type of food [ ] [ ][ ] 5)How long to spoil [ ] [ ][ ]

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) 2): How does the height of a basketball hoop affect how many shots I make ? Variable Independ. Depend. Constant 1) Size of basketball [ ] [ ][ ] 2)Height of basketball hoop[ ] [ ][ ] 3)Amount of shots I make [ ] [ ][ ] 4)Distance I shoot the ball [ ] [ ][ ] 5)Type of ball I use [ ] [ ][ ]

Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups) 3): How does the speed at which a rope is turning affect how long I can jump without stopping? Variable Independ. Depend. Constant 1) How long I jump… [ ] [ ][ ] 2)The people turning… [ ] [ ][ ] 3)The surface I am jumping..[ ] [ ][ ] 4)The type of rope [ ] [ ][ ] 5)The length of the rope [ ] [ ][ ] 6) The speed the rope is turn.. [ ] [ ][ ]

Task: Today we will set up an investigation as a class to answer the question: “How does the type of ball (tennis ball vs. wiffle ball) affect how many shots I make in a container?” Complete the IDD by: 1)Entering the title: “The affect of the type of ball (tennis ball vs. wiffle ball) on the amount of shots I make in a container.” 2)Entering the question (See above) 3)Writing an “if…then…because…” hypothesis 4)Identifying the Independent variable for this investigation. 5)Identifying the Dependent Variable for this investigation. 6)Identifying at least 3 constant variables for this investigation. Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups )

1)Entering the title: “The affect of the type of ball (tennis ball vs. wiffle ball) on the amount of shots I make in a container.” 2)Entering the question: “How does the type of ball (tennis ball vs. wiffle ball) affect how many shots I make in a container?” Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups )

1)We will pass a wiffle ball and a tennis ball around the circle. Take about 10 secs (each student) to make qualitative observations about the differences between them. 2) Writing an “if…then…because…” hypothesis Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups )

1)Identifying the Independent variable for this investigation. 2)Skip the part that says “Levels of I.V” 3)Identifying the Dependent Variable for this investigation. 4)Identifying at least 3 Constant variables for this investigation. “How does the type of ball (tennis ball vs. wiffle ball) affect how many shots I make in a container?” Inquiry: How do I design a controlled experiment? (identifying variables, controls and experimental groups )
