Steve Horseman – Grainger Industrial Supply, District Sales Manager for the State of Kansas The Four Corners of Sustainability

Agenda Part 1: What is Sustainability Part 2: Four Corners of Sustainability –Energy Management –Water Conservation –Green Cleaning & Indoor Air Quality –Reduce Waste Part 3: Additional Resources

What is Sustainability Sustainability means: meeting the present generation’s needs without compromising future generation’s ability to meet their own needs. As it relates to business, sustainability means adhering to an expanded spectrum of values and measures for success called the triple bottom line (TBL). This includes defining, prioritizing and measuring economic, environmental and social success equally. Defining our Intentions

The Four Corners of Sustainability Energy Management Water Conservation Green Cleaning & I.A.Q. Reduce Waste

Overview: Coal-fired plants accounted for nearly 50% of energy generation in 2005, resulting in an excess release of harmful toxins into the atmosphere Rising Costs relating to the consumption and monitoring of Energy need to be addressed Things You Can Do: Monitor Building Energy Performance Eliminate the use CFCs Utilize Renewable Energy Reducing Energy to Save Money Energy Management

Motion Sensor l Hi-Efficiency Ballast T8 Florescent Lamp

LEED: Case Study (EA) EPA Headquarters –LEED EB : Platinum –25 story; 950,000 sqft – Office Building Energy and Atmosphere –Goal: Improve their Energy Efficiency –Action: Invested $500,000 to upgrade equipment; Installed highly efficient HVAC & Lighting systems –Discovery: Earned Energy Star Rating ; 34% increase in Energy Efficiency –End State: Improvements generated $600k in annual savings; payback of less than one year

Water Conservation Overview: Americans use of the public water supply continues to increase Using large volumes of water increases maintenance costs for building operations Practicing Water Conservation can easily reduce water use in a commercial building by 30% or more. Things You Can Do: Monitor Water Consumption Performance Reduce Indoor Potable Water Consumption Reduce Consumption to Save Energy

Water Conservation Electronic FaucetWaterless Urinal A Single Waterless Urinal can save up to 40k gal of water per year A Single low flow faucet can use up to 60% less water than a traditional faucet A low flow toilet can save up to 500 gal of water per year High-Efficiency Toilet Annual Savings $398.75 Annual Savings $18,750 Annual Savings $70,312

Green Cleaning/Indoor Air Quality

LEED: Case Study (IEQ) Rosa Parks Elementary (OR) - –LEED NC : Gold –63,000 sqft Indoor Air Quality –Goal: Improve their Indoor Environment. –Action: Installed carbon dioxide monitors; Paints, carpeting, adhesives, and sealants were selected for low chem. emissions; Integrated Green Cleaning Program. –End State: “The green framework reduced operational expenses and provided a healthier school environment but complemented and supported the educational mission of the school, which was the primary goal.” – School Official

Reduce Waste Overview: Sustainability requires a facility to deal with waste in a responsible way Working towards waste reduction minimizes the quantity of waste experienced while improving your building environment. Things You Can Do: Procurement of Sustainable Materials Regular Practice of Waste Reduction Activities Reduce Source Waste Reuse & Recycle

Reduce Waste Recycled Trash Liners Coreless Bath Tissue REUSE Lamp Recycling Box Recycling Bin RECYCLE Automated Towel DispenserCoreless Bath Tissue REDUCE
