1. As per core content, students learn the beginnings of Latin American music and how it relates to their world today. The origins are given first, then music examples of Latin American are played. Students are formatively assessed at the end of class.

7. The First Ingredient of Latin Music. The early Spanish and Portuguese settlers The early Spanish and Portuguese settlers (think 2 SLICES OF BREAD). They brought with them their folk songs, dances, church music and instruments (guitars) from their native lands. They also brought over their harmonies and rhythms. SPAINPORTUGAL

8. The Second Ingredient of Latin Music: The second ingredient came from inside Latin America itself (PEANUT BUTTER). The melodies and rhythms of the ancient Indians (Mayans and Aztecs) were also incorporated.

9. The Third Ingredient: The third ingredient came from the Africans brought over to Latin America as slaves (JELLY). The addition of the Africans’ melodies and SYNCOPATED rhythms gave the music of Latin America an African flavor which it has never lost.

10. The Style’s of Latin Music There are many styles of Latin music that are reflected in American Music. Let’s take a look at a few:
