1 Breakfast

2 Rapid Writing Exercise!
In 1 minute silently write down as many things that come to your mind when you think of the phrase: Teenagers and Breakfast

3 Minds on: Video

4 Why is breakfast important?
Eating Breakfast: Gives you more energy: In general, kids and teens who eat breakfast have more energy, do better in school, and eat healthier throughout the day! Increases your metabolism: some experts believe eating breakfast keeps your metabolism running higher because skipping meals causes the body to kick into 'starvation' mode Improves your mood: while your sleeping, your body has gone for long period without food, skipping breakfast could lead to a lack of energy or make you grumpy

5 Why is breakfast important (2)
4. Prevents overeating and weight gain: skipping breakfast can cause you to overeat later in the day, which could lead to unnecessary weight gain 5. Improves your ability to concentrate and learn: kids who don't eat breakfast are less able to learn at school, get less iron (an important nutrient) in their diets, and are more likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI), which is a sign they may be overweight. Eating breakfast on a regular basis has a beneficial influence on attention, concentration, memory, and school achievement

6 What makes a “Good” Breakfast?
An ideal breakfast should consist of a complex carbohydrate, protein and a fruit (i.e a bran muffin, milk and a banana) Higher in carbohydrates and lower in fat Includes food choices from at least 3 of the 4 food groups SOMETHING is better than NOTHING at all!

7 Breakfast Ideas First, the traditional ones: eggs
French toast, waffles, or pancakes (try wheat or whole-grain varieties) cold cereal and milk hot cereal, such as oatmeal or cream of wheat (try some dried fruit or nuts on top) whole-grain toast, bagel, or English muffin with cheese yogurt with fruit or nuts fruit smoothie, such as a strawberry smoothie

8 Breakfast Ideas (2) And now some weird (but yummy) ones:
banana dog (peanut butter, a banana, and raisins in a long whole-grain bun) breakfast taco (shredded cheese on a tortilla, folded in half and microwaved; top with salsa) country cottage cheese (apple butter mixed with cottage cheese) fruit and cream cheese sandwich (use strawberries or other fresh fruit) sandwich — grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, or another favorite leftovers (they're not just for dinner anymore!)

9 If you are rushed in the morning try these:
yogurt fresh fruit whole-grain muffin trail mix of nuts, dried fruits, pretzels, crackers, and dry cereal Granola bar and glass of orange juice

10 Breakfast “Rap”

11 Kitchen Group Recipe Selection Competition!
With your group find a breakfast recipe that is healthy and includes food from at least 2 food groups Create a proposal that includes: Why your food is a great breakfast choice (what components does it include i.e carbohydrates?) Which food group recommendations does your recipe meet? Can it be prepared and eaten in the appropriate time limit (one hour)? Why should we make the recipe as a class? *Please answer these questions on chart paper and have two members of your group present your proposal to the class* Every student will place an anonymous vote and the recipe with the highest number of votes will be chosen for the breakfast food lab!
