1 SS 1 VISUAL ART TOPIC : ANCIENT EGYPTIAN ART LOCTION: Egypt lies in the north-eastern corner of Africa continent where Africa and Asia meet.The ancient Egyptians settled on the banks of the nile river for irrigation of their farms. EGYPTIAN HISTORY: The Egyptian rulers are called pharaoh. Ancient Egyptian history falls into three major periods which are further divided into dynaties (which means the period which a single family provided the succession of rulers). 1.The first period is called Archaic and old kingdom- 3200 – 2258BC.

2 2.Middle period - 2134-1786BC 3.The new kingdom-1570-30BC 4.The pharaoh is sometimes shown wearing the crown of northern Egypt. CULTURE, RELIGION, AND ART: These are interwoven, their culture and religion stress a life after death, therefore must of their painting and sculptures were religious. ACHITECTURE: The archaic period concentrated on building palaces, tombs and temples. Bricks and stones were used for permanent structures. Mastaba was one of the basic tomb introduced.

4 Pigments were derived from natural earth colours mixed with a binder of water and gum, they also combine paint with mud. Their subject matters: Were derived from mythology iritual and daily activities. In the paintings, important figures are made larger, men painted darker than women. ASSIGNMENT Briefly explain the architectural work in Egyptian art.
