How do you grow? What is a tumor? Quick loose end- anatomy vs. physiology

The cell’s “life cycle” Two phases- Interphase Mitosis Mitosis- Cell makes an identical copy of itself. Interphase- Cell is working on its normal functions.

Make Tissues Types of tissue: epithelial- cover organs/create inner linings muscle- tissues that contract connective- hold two structures together nervous- brain, spinal cord

GROWTH!!! Must double chromosome # from 46 to 92 so half can go to each new cell.

4 Stages Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Just remember- “PAY ME ANY TIME!”

In prophase, the nucleus’ DNA condenses into chromosomes and become visible.

The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, with one chromosome of each pair on either side of the center.

Pairs of chromosomes begin to separate into chromatids and pull to opposite sides of the cell.

Chromosomes unravel back into chromatin as two new nuclei are formed, each with the same number of chromosomes as the original cell had.

While your cell is in interphase, there are genes that tell your cell to wait to go into mitosis again or to continue to reproduce immediately.

Cancer is caused by the uncontrolled division of a bunch of cells. This bunch of constantly dividing cells is called a tumor.

A gene regulates cancer cells as an on/off switch to go through mitosis… So cancer is a mutation in that gene, so the cell continues to divide without stopping.

For reproduction, not growth Essentially mitosis twice Cells go from 46 to 92 to 46 to 23 chromosomes.

Makes sperm/egg cells Each contains half of the genetic material Just remember- you give half of your DNA to your offspring.

Explain how a mutated cell could lead to cancer
