23. 23 Union’s Internet connection  In December 2001 Union went from four (4) T1 lines providing up to 6 Mbps of access to an OC3 line currently providing 20 Mbps of access  Two parts to our Internet access: 1) line, 2) Internet access purchased  Verizon is our Internet Service Provider (ISP)  OC3 line is capable of 155 Mbps, providing for future growth (at additional access charge)

24. 24 Bandwidth “shaper”  Used to efficiently manage the Internet bandwidth  Insures that high priority applications get bandwidth they need on a priority basis (e.g. WWW)  Stop bandwidth hog applications (e.g. Morpheus) from clogging the Internet pipe

30. 30 Virtual Private Networking (VPN)  New device designed to create a secure encrypted tunnel between the remote computer and the Union network  All services available on Union’s network are available to the remote user through this tunnel  Will eventually de-emphasize most of proxy server use

31. 31 Virus Protection – for servers  Experimenting with virus protection for mail servers  Checks every piece of mail for presence of virus  Expensive
