Topic: Potential and Kinetic Energy Essential Question: How does the amount of potential energy on an object affect the amount of kinetic energy it has?

What are potential and kinetic energy? Potential energy is stored energy or energy waiting to be released. Kinetic energy is released energy or energy in motion.

How does potential energy work? When something has potential energy it has the ability to possibly move based on its position or size.

How does position affect potential energy? 1.The higher an object is off the ground the more work was needed to get it there. 2.The more work it takes to move the object to more potential energy it will have. More energy need to move book= more potential energy Less energy need to move book= Less potential energy

How does size affect potential energy? 1.The larger something is the more work is needed to move the object. 2.The more work needed to move the object the more potential energy it has. Really big dog=hard to move=more potential energy Chihuahua= pick up with one hand= less potential energy

How does kinetic energy work? Any moving object has some kinetic energy. The faster something is moving the more kinetic energy it has. Puppy running=fast=more kinetic energy Turtle=slow=less kinetic energy

Can objects have both potential and kinetic energy? Yes! Objects in motion can go through stages of both potential and kinetic energy. Example

What is an example of energy transforming All potential energy because it is waiting at the top of the hill. Still has some potential but potential is turning into kinetic. All energy has been released so this is all kinetic energy and no potential. Gained potential energy back because we are back in a position in which we could fall.

Finished You have 10 minutes to complete a 4-5 sentence summary over your notes. Glue into the right hand page of your notebook. We will be going outside to see how potential and kinetic energy is worked into soccer.

Hallway & Outside Expectations SILENT 1.We are SILENT in the hallways. STRAIGHT 2.We are in a STRAIGHT line. ALL 3.We will follow ALL directions both in the hallway and outside. 4.Failure to follow expectations will result in coming inside and doing an alternate assignment.

Left Page Assignment 1.Pick an activity you have seen where potential and kinetic energy are transformed. (Cannot be soccer or a roller coaster) 2.Draw and color a picture of that activity 1.You must label where in the picture there is potential energy and where is kinetic energy 3.You must write 5-7 sentences about how you activity includes both potential and kinetic energy and how to change back and forth.
