Abstract Purpose : Street lights in areas with a low frequency of commuters are On all throughout the night for no purpose. The consequence is that ---a large amount of power is wasted. By utilizing the flexible yet robust switching capabilities of light-emitting diode(LED) lamps a fast reacting, reliably operating, and power-conserving street lighting system can be developed in areas having wireless internet connectivity . The purpose of this project is to describe the working of such Smart Street Lighting (SSL) system.

task Turn streets lights on with 20% of their maximum intensity when there is not enough ambient light in surrounding (after sunset)- can be implemented using an LDR (Light Dependent Resisistor) The area where the SSLS needs to be employed should be kept under surveillance using camera . Whenever any motion is detected through video getting streamed (made by any vehicle or pedestrian) - increase lighting by 80% in that area without disturbing anything other. Once motion stops ,return back to original state.

Solution : Detect any movement made in ‘visible’ area ( field of view of camera ! ). Find depth based on the image taken by camera at some angle down to the road. Based on pixel location of the movement in image send some predefined ‘signal’ to arduino via serial communication which will be mapped to some set of street lights nearby that area .As a result they will glow with full intensity while others will be at their original 20% glow.

STEP BY STEP APPROACH Step by step : In night all street lights will get on at 20% intensity using only one universal LDR connected to arduino. (LDR just automates the process of light switching……….not a necessity for SSLC) The camera should ideally be deployed at a higher location tilted towards ground by required angle in such a way that it covers a vast significant area (i.e. main road where the system is employed)

Camera once established shouldn’t be changed from it’s position AT ANY COST.
We’ll get the video stream from it. Using image processing techniques delete background. Having left with only ‘required’ objects in the scene we can detect any movement, locate it’s coordinates and send it to arduino. Arduino will be programmed in such a way that it can map the coordinates to the depth in the scene (see first image..!) and turn the street lights nearby that location at full intensity.

Wider implementation In order to increase the domain of SSLC ,the requirement of wireless internet connection in concerned area can be dropped. However by that the process will no longer remain ‘wireless’. Video will be streamed using connections.

Camera look….

Higher heights and camera tilted at appropriate angle that covers more of ‘useful’ area will be helpful.

Tilted camera look….!

As further extension in place of serial communication we can transfer data from all such video cameras employed at several different locations wirelessly to a common system where video stream will be processed and signal will be sent to automate the lighting for whole campus…

Real-time capturing , processing and generating control signals…

Zonal maps…

Equipment's used in implementing sslc

Arduino (no more shortage of control buses…)

Usb serial communication port

Our Sslc uses serial port to communicate with the image processing software

Will be wireless soon…

Relay circuit for controlling lights…

Ac relay…

Additional advantage:
CAMERAS USED TO COVER THE REQUIRED AREA FOR SSLC CAN ALSO SERVE FOR SECURITY PURPOSES (ALL THROUGH OUT THE DAY )CONVERTING THE AREA INTO NOT ONLY SMART BUT SMART-SAFE ZONE !!
