Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 They had come to Him, pressed about Him [1] As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] – Had already seen and heard much [4:14-44] some from Nazareth; Isaiah fulfilled [14-30] some from Capernaum; miracles [31-41] others from Galilee; more preaching [42-44]

Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 They had come to Him, pressed about Him [1] As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] He got into Peter and Andrews boat [2-3] – John 1:35-42 shows they already knew Jesus, had decided earlier to follow Him – Luke shows this as a 2 nd calling, a confirmation – Easier to teach; a natural amphitheater

Mark 4:10-11; 9:2 a need for both public and private study Pauls example in Acts 28:17-18, 21-23, 30-31 -- see also Acts 20:17-21

Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 Launch out into the deep… [4] As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] – Peter protests at first [5] After teaching crowd, focus on apostles [5:4-11] we have toiled all night and caught nothing -- argument from experience Jesus a carpenter; apostles pro fishermen! -- argument from knowledge, intellect …let down your nets for a catch [4]

Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 Launch out into the deep… [4] As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] – Peter protests at first [5] After teaching crowd, focus on apostles [5:4-11] Nevertheless, at Your word I will… Peter had seen, heard enough to trust Jesus …let down your nets for a catch [4] – he concedes his arguments to Jesus word [5] Gods word trumps all arguments -- cp. 1 Cor. 1:20-21, 25; 2 Cor. 10:3-5

Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 Launch out into the deep… [4] As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] After teaching crowd, focus on apostles [5:4-11] signaled James and John for help [7; cp. v. 10] …let down your nets for a catch [4] – …their net was breaking [6] …they caught a great number of fish [6] both boats filled to point of sinking [7]

Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 Launch out into the deep… [4] As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] After teaching crowd, focus on apostles [5:4-11] confirmation of the greatness of this miracle …let down your nets for a catch [4] …they caught a great number of fish [6] – cp. Isaiah 6:5; presence of holiness, Lord everyone involved knew this was impossible! Depart from me, for I am a sinful man… [8] – everyone involved astonished at catch [9-10]

Matthew 13:47-50 This is Dragnet fishing, not Bait fishing [v. 4-5] General observations regarding fishers of men the net gathers some of every kind [v. 47] dividing good and bad done at end [v. 49] fishermans job: let down the net (gospel!) gospel teaching is not primarily issue-based but based on whole gospel [Acts 20:20-21]

Rom. 1:16; 1 Pet. 4:11 To succeed, we must act at HIS word [v. 5] – not a product of church doctrine, etc. – motivation and confidence to act should come from His word, not from other source

Fishers of Men Luke 5:1-11 As always, Jesus teaching the multitude [5:1-3] After teaching crowd, focus on apostles [5:4-11] This is Dragnet fishing, not Bait fishing [v. 4-5] General observations regarding fishers of men To succeed, we must act at HIS word [v. 5] – will require hard work, effort, help from Him and others [v. 7-10; Matt. 28:20; Eph. 4:11-16] The impossible made greatly possible by Him -- [vs. 6-9]
