3 Why Italy? 1.Italy was the center of the Roman Empire - it’s location made it central to European and African trade; brought new ideas 2. Architectural remains to study - Coins, buildings, statues… 3. Roman Catholic Church - supporter of the arts

4 City-states – Ran by rich & powerful families, dominated by wealthy merchants Renaissance Art – Reflected humanism – Used perspective to create 3D art – Dominated by the arch, column, and domes
