2. What is a Sorority? Sorority: A body of women united for some purpose. The term originated from the Medieval Latin word sororitas meaning sisterhood. Fraternities & Sororities have been recognized at CSUN since 1958. Our organizations are formed with the goals of contributing to the collegiate development of members Focus on academics Promote community service and philanthropy Time and financial commitment Lifetime organizations providing networking, support, and sisterhood.

3. What is Panhellenic? The National Panhellenic Conference provides support and guidance for its 26 member inter/national sororities/women’s fraternities and serves as the national voice on contemporary issues of sorority life. Founded in 1902, NPC is one of the oldest and largest women’s membership organizations representing more than 4 million women at 655 college/university campuses, 2,986 chapters and, 4,500 local alumnae chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Each year, NPC- affiliated collegians and alumnae donate more than $5 million to worthy causes, provide $2.8 million in scholarships to women and volunteer 500,000 hours in their communities.

4.  Active - A person who has been initiated into a lifelong membership of a Greek organization.  Bid – A written invitation to a new member to pledge a sorority.  Big Sis: An initiated member selected to mentor a new member.  Chapter- A term used by national sororities for various campus branches.  Dirty Rushing – Any violation of a rule set by the University Panhellenic Council as governed by the National Panhellenic Conference. NOT ALLOWED  Dropping out of Recruitment – If it becomes necessary for a new member to discontinue attendance at recruitment parties, she should check with her college Panhellenic as to procedure and registration for Recruitment at a later date.  Hazing: Any type of activity that does not contribute to the positive development of a person. Hazing is against the law and is not tolerated at CSUN. Terms and Definitions

5.  Intentional Single Preference/ Solo Bidding/ Suicide/Suiciding – To indicate only one choice at a preferential signing. NPC strongly recommends that every girl going through recruitment indicate a first and a second choice at preferential signing.  Philanthropy -Charitable projects or donations sponsored by a fraternity or sorority  Rho Gamma – During Recruitment Week there is an advisor for large groups of potential new members. The advisors, sometimes called Rho Gamma, are active sorority members who keep their sorority affiliation a secret during Recruitment Week.  Strict Silence – The period of time designated by university Panhellenic Council when there is no communication between potential new members and sorority members. Some university Panhellenic Council prohibit contact between potential new members and their relatives and friends during silence.

10. Values  Sororities were founded to change the world!  Sororities were founded to change academics and women's rights.  Every year sorority women donate thousands of hours and raise millions of dollars to support their philanthropy.

12. Hazing Hazing is against the Law and it not tolerated CSUN has a ZERO TOLERANCE hazing policy No chapter, colony, student or alumnus shall conduct nor condone hazing activities. In reality, fraternities and sororities are values based organizations dedicated to the development of character and lifelong friendships.

13. Pre-Recruitment Education Program CSUN students interested in joining a fraternity/sorority will need to complete the Pre-Recruitment Educational Program aka PREP, prior to attending any recruitment activity. PREP is a comprehensive online educational program. There are many things to know about fraternity and sorority membership and this program is designed to help students learn more about this particular involvement opportunity at CSUN.

14. Statistics  Each chapter can offer bids to (pledge) the same number of women during formal recruitment. That number is called Quota.  Quota is determined by the # of Potential New Members attending preferences/ # chapters at CSUN (ex. 350 PNMs/7 chapters = 50 per chapter)  Quota is the Maximum Number of women a sorority can take.

23. Food, Water and Shelter  It is recommended that everyone eat before each day of recruitment!  Lunch is provided to you on days 1 and 2.  On Preference Night a small appetizer or dessert will be provided at the Preference parties.  Water is available at all times inside the parties.  Days 1 and 2, you will have a break round, where you will have a chance to relax between parties.

24. About the Parties  Parties begin and end with singing and clapping.  During the parties, you should expect to talk to several members of the chapter.  The number of chapters you may visit each day gets smaller while the length of each party gets longer. This enables both you and the chapters to make informed decisions when it comes to selection.  The theme of the parties becomes more serious as the weekend goes on. By preference, the chapters will be demonstrating traits important to their sisterhood.  If you do not have a full schedule, you will have a “break round” where you will relax while waiting for your next event. You will have two break rounds on day 1 and at least two break round on day 2.  Not everyone will have a full schedule Day 2. In fact, the majority will not have a full party schedule. It’s normal!

25. Special Schedules  Special schedules are arranged for academic and university conflicts.  If you need a special schedule, you will tell your Rho Gamma who will inform the Recruitment Team and the Sororities.
