10. We must recognize that Jesus could have sinned (though He didn’t)

11. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin (Heb. 4:15).

13. If one is unable to sin then neither can they be tempted to sin
If one is unable to sin then neither can they be tempted to sin. The fact that the Scripture says that Christ was “tempted, yet without sin,” tells us that it was possible for Him to sin.

14. The fact that Jesus could have sinned but did not sin leaves us with an example that we would do well to follow.

17. Knowing that warfare was inevitable, our Lord prepared Himself through fasting

18. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man” (1 Cor. 10:13).

Temptation is inevitable. We will never get away from it. Jesus never got away from it: “Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time” (Luke 4:13).

20. Prayer is necessary for conquering temptation in our lives:
And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one (Mat. 6:13; NKJV)

God is not the source of temptations (James 1:12-14). We should be careful never to give God credit for the work of His enemy and adversary. God wants the best for men.

In Matt. 4:1-3, the words “devil” (v. 1) and “tempter” (v. 3) are used interchangeably. In verse 10, Jesus refers to him as “Satan.” These are the different names and/or titles of one malignant spiritual being whose intent is to destroy the lives of men.

26. Regardless of the agent that Satan uses (Boss, pretty girl, fine-lookin’ guy, children, spouse, etc.), remember that Satan is the Tempter and it is him that you are in warfare with.

27. 3. Be Full of the Holy Ghost

28. Luke 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Luke 4:2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

29. Jesus was full of the Holy Ghost BEFORE He went to war against the Tempter. If Jesus needed this fullness, how much more do we :
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18).

34. Only by yielding to the power of the Holy Spirit are we able to successfully confront temptation.

35. 4. Be Full of Scripture

36. David said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Ps. 119:11).

37. God’s Word has the power to confront and destroy temptation, but it must first be hidden in our hearts so that the Holy Spirit can bring it out of our hearts.

38. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Mat. 4:4)

Jesus did not need to quote the whole Old Testament. One Rhema was sufficient to thwart the devil at every turn.

42. 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

43. A lot of our temptation is an attempt to fulfill natural needs and desires in ways unauthorized by Scripture.

44. When God’s Word is given priority over our “needs” then God will ensure the fulfillment of our needs in legitimate ways (Matt. 6:25-34).

Notice that the devil SHOWED (Matt. 4:8.) His intention is to tantalize through the eyes. Many of our problems with sin come from looking at and seeing things.

48. Matt 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

49. Make a concrete decision that we will not allow ourselves to “leer and lust” at obstacles the devil places in our path to trip us (Job 31:1)

50. 7. Do not compromise with the world

52. The Tempter offered Jesus the world
The Tempter offered Jesus the world. However, what does it profit a man if he should gain the whole world but lose his soul (Mat. 16:26).

53. Friendship with the world is enmity with God and is in direct association with Satan who is the “prince” and “god” of this world (James 4:4-7; John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; 2 Cor. 4:4; Eph. 2:2; 6:12; 1 John 5:18, 19).

54. Because Jesus did not compromise with the world, Satan had nothing in Him (John 14:30). Follow the Lord’s steps and Satan will have nothing in which to accuse you.

57. Too many Christians get into pride and “tempt God” by claiming promises inappropriately.

He must not be a new believer, lest the position go to his head and the Devil trip him up (The Message)

60. The way to victory and authority over Satan is to humble ourselves before God. When we do this then we can successfully resist Satan because he will not have any rights to us (James 4:6-10; 1 Pet. 5:5-9).
