Item 1

Item 2 “Charles Darwin was surprised to learn the local people could tell by looking at a tortoise which island it came from. Darwin also studied finches [small birds]. Each island had a different species of finch. Later, Darwin came to the conclusion that all were descended from a single species of finch. On each island, the finches had diverged and become slightly different.”

Item 2 “Charles Darwin was surprised to learn the local people could tell by looking at a tortoise which island it came from. Later, Darwin came to believe that the different tortoises all descended [came from] one species of tortoise.””

Item 3 Words to know Mutation: a DNA error Unfavorable: not helpful Favorable: helpful

Item 4

Decide if you want your pg. 59 to be a foldable or Cornell notes. Foldable or Cornell notes?

“Nature is neither kind nor cruel, but indifferent.” -Richard Dawkins To survive & reproduce, animals need… -Food -Water -Shelter -Territory -Mates Must engage in competition with other animals (same species or not) in order to get those things.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) Traveled to the Galapagos Islands Noticed small differences in the tortoises and finches on each island Developed the Theory of Natural Selection: favorable traits become more common over time, while unfavorable traits decrease Also called, survival of the fittest

1.DNA mutates and makes a new trait. 2.Favorable mutations join the group of favorable traits for that species. 3.Animals with favorable traits reproduce & pass on “good genes.”

Mutations

Started with 1 species of finch. Different islands have different food. Birds with favorable beak structure mutations caught and ate food, survived, & reproduced. The mutated beak genes became the norm. New species of finches became present.

Watch it 2 times. Think about the information in the video and in your notes. Write 5 sentences to answer these questions (pg. 58) What is natural selection? What happens to animals because of natural selection? What does it mean to be fit for an environment, compared to not fit for an environment? Can you give an example of natural selection? (i.e. 2 fish in a lake, 2 monkeys in a jungle) Include a colored picture Brainpop: Natural Selection

Watch it 1-2 times. Think about the information in the video and in your notes. Brainpop: Natural Selection Left Side Activity (poem/song lyrics, comic w/ summary, script for a kids show, etc.) (pg. 58) Must cover the following information: What is natural selection? What happens to animals because of natural selection? What does it mean to be fit for an environment, compared to not fit for an environment? Can you give an example of natural selection?
