Introduction to Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Written by: Jonathan Edwards, 1703-1758

Introduction to “Sinners…”

Meet the Writer: Jonathan Edwards October 5, 1703 – March 22, 1758 Jonathan Edwards was not merely a stern, zealous preacher. He was a brilliant, thoughtful, and complicated man. Science, reason, and observation of the physical world confirmed Edwards deeply spiritual vision of a universe filled with the presence of God.

Building Background  Edwards was most known for his fiery sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," which implored parishioners to embrace the teachings of Jesus Christ before they were banished to hell as nonbelievers.  Jonathan Edwards delivered this sermon at a time when colonists started to find answers to life’s questions through science rather than religion

Building Background  Some Puritans were abandoning their faith and not attending regular church services.  In order to boost church membership, Puritan officials had softened the rules and, in Edwards’ mind, allowed these less-than- desirable candidates to join the church.

Building Background The “natural men” Edwards were trying to awaken were those in the congregation who:  Knew about the Gospel – the biblical accounts of Jesus’ ministry, death, and resurrection.  Had never made a personal commitment to Jesus.  Were complacent in their religious tradition

Major Theme Four Features of “Walking a Slippery Slope”  The threat of destruction is constant,  The destruction is imminent,  It is self-generated, and  The delay of that destruction is due to God’s restraining hand. “There is nothing that keeps wicked men, at any moment, out of Hell, but the mere pleasure of God.”- Edwards

The Art of Persuasion “Sinners” persuades:  God’s power is terrifying  God’s wrath burns hot against the wicked  The wicked stand condemned by the law and are deserving of hell  Nothing will save sinners from eternal punishment except a saving faith in Christ. Ethos: When alluding to the Bible, Edwards’ uses expert testimony Pathos: Fear is introduced thoroughly before a smidge of hope is given Logos: If you are a sinner, you are going to hell. Change will arise only by engaging emotions.

Use of Imagery “The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them…” “…if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into a bottomless gulf…” “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked: his wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else, but to be cast into the fire.” “They deserve to be cast into hell; so that divine justice never stands in the way; it makes no objection against God's using his power at any moment to destroy them. Yea, on the contrary, justice calls aloud for an infinite punishment of their sins. The sword of divine justice is every moment brandished over their heads, and it is nothing but the hand of arbitrary mercy, and God's mere will, that holds it back."

Use of Personification “…the fire pent up in their own hearts is struggling to break out…” “The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them, and would fain lay hold on them and swallow them up…” Use of Metaphor “The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow of your heart, and strains the bow…” “…it is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath…”

Use of Repitition  As you read, look for images and words that Edwards uses repeatedly, such as wrath, nothing, and descriptions of “the pit of hell.”  Edwards repeats the word nothing several times in order to emphasize that there is nothing the natural man can do to save himself  Wrath is used in the full text 51 times  Definition: The recurrence of sounds, words, phrases, lines, or stanzas in a speech or piece of writing  Repetition increases the sense of unity in a work and can call attention to particular ideas.  Edwards uses repetition to emphasize his points “... are actually suffering the fierceness of His wrath in hell....” “... held in the hand of God, over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it....”

Use of Allusion Biblical allusions are among the most common types of allusion in literature. Definition: a figure of speech that makes a reference to a place, person, or something that has happened. The wrath of Almighty God is now undoubtedly hanging over a great part of this congregation. Let every one fly out of Sodom: "Haste and escape for your lives, look not behind you, escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed." This is a biblical reference to a story found in Genesis, the story of what happened to Lot and his family when God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The city of Sodom is believed to have been destroyed by God because nearly everyone in the city was living sinfully. Obviously this congregation does not live in Sodom, so Edwards uses the term to stand for all conditions of sinful living.
