Key Ideas The meaning of multiplication and division may need to be extended when the numbers to be operated on shift from whole numbers to fractions. The equivalence of a ÷ (b/c) and a x (c/b) can be seen by considering different interpretations of a single diagram.

Consider this as you discuss… What do we learn about the meaning of addition as we explore the complexities of adding fractions? What must we understand about fractions in order to figure out how to add them?
