2 Problem 1  The dimensions of a rectangular kitchen table were 5 ½ feet by 3 ¼ feet. Alice said the dimensions were ¾ of an inch too short on all sides from the dimensions she wanted. What are the dimensions she wanted?

3 Problem 2  Why is multiplying 3/7 x 2/9 easier than adding 3/7 + 2/9?

4 Problem 3  Explain why the square root of 35 2 is 35.

5 Answers  1 Change 5½ feet to 66 inches (5 x 12 = 60 and ½ a foot is 6); 60 + 6 = 66 and change 3¼ feet to 39 inches (3 x 12 = 36; ¼ foot is 3) 36 + 3 = 39. Add ¾ inch to each dimension. 66¾” X 39”.  2 When multiplying fractions you can just multiply the n x n and the d x d. You can also use cancellation. When adding, you find the LCD, do equal fractions, add, and reduce.

6 Answers  3 35 2 is a perfect square. The square root of a perfect square is the base number or in this case 35.
