Malmö meets the sea

Risebergabäcken Small watercourses Canals and basins Nature reserve Time Receiving waters Runoff due to urbanisation

IWW Amsterdam Dr Tony Persson, 2011-11-01 Riseberga Creek catchment (37 km 2 )

IWW Amsterdam Dr Tony Persson, 2011-11-01

Main issues - erosion, flooding and angry citizens Citizens fear new flooding

Riseberga creek - Sustainable urban drainage Fosie industrial area Reduce hydraulic load to recipient Open stormwater drainage Slow process Attractive blue-green space

Transition towards a sustainable urban drainage Quantity Quality Amenity Traditional urban drainage Sustainable urban drainage

Sustainable stormwater management Fosie industrial area, Malmö

Sustainable stormwater management Fosie industrial area, Malmö Ecological oasis in an industrial area Damping stormwater runoff Create an urban woodland marsh Recreation Trails for horseback riding Multifunctional use of the urban green space Biological diversity EU-financing 50% Investments costs: € 620 000 Calculated maintenance cost: € 11 000/yr

Sustainable urban drainage in Fosie industrial area, Malmö Blue-green integration

Key factors and challenges Integrated planning Cooperation Open-mindness Landuse Patience Handling input from residents and stakeholders Agreements Obstacles and objections Much space needed Safety Maintenance

IWW Amsterdam Dr Tony Persson, 2011-11-01 What to expect in the future – Climate scenarios for SW Sweden  Temperature: annual mean temperature will increase with 2,5 – 3,0 °C until 2050  Winter: ~ +4 °C  Summer: ~ +2 °C  Precipitation: annual precipitation will increase with 15-20 %  Winter: ~ +40 %  Summer: ~ -10 %

IWW Amsterdam Dr Tony Persson, 2011-11-01 Some possible consequenses for the Riseberga Creek in a future climate  Change of hydrological regime – more discharge and increased flood frequency during winter - less discharge and decreased flood frequency during summer, but maybe an increased precipitation intensity during summer could lead to more severe flooding  Changed conditions for aquatic habitats – warmer water and (even) larger fluctuations in discharge, water velocity and water depth in 2050 than today  Decreased water quality – warmer water and higher ground water levels that might lead to more saturated surface runoff and more erosion and sediment transport

IWW Amsterdam Dr Tony Persson, 2011-11-01 Modelling of flooding and the effects of possible measures  Risk- and vulnerability approach: Climate/Land use scenarios  weather generator  hydrological modelling  hydraulic modelling  flooding  Using the modelling results to quantify the impact of a wide range of possible measures
