3 What is Training? Training – focuses on specific job knowledge and skill that is to be applied in the short run. Development – focuses on broad knowledge and insights that may be required for adaptation to environmental demands in the future. The goal of training is for employees to: – master the knowledge, skill, and behaviors emphasized in training programs, and – apply them to their day-to-day activities. 8 Types of Training Induction Training/New Employee Orientation  Introduces a new employee to the organization, its rules, & procedures and regulations  Is generally short  Gives information about the work environment, benefits, company culture, company history, organization chart, etc.  Helps integrate the employee into the organization Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. 9 Types of Training (continued) On-the-job Training - Training while remaining in the workplace to increase the knowledge and skills of an employee for improving job performance Includes demonstration or instruction, coaching, job rotation, and projects Refresher Training - Also known as retraining Purpose is to introduce employees to new procedures and technological advances Off-the-job Training - occurs when employees are trained at a different facility. – Includes lectures, distance learning, computer-based/ self-paced training, technology-based training, etc. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013.
