1 TODAY’S PROMPT We have whole class workshop. If you forgot your poem, write it neatly or type it right now. You need one copy. If you are ready… here’s your prompt: write a poem about a color, but don’t name the color in the poem. Use the color to guide the images.

2 TODAY’S PROMPT: THE FLIP SIDE This week, think of something that has happened to you recently that was stressful, traumatic, or unpleasant. Write a poem about this event as you experienced it, regardless of anyone else’s perspectives or feelings on what occurred. Then rewrite the poem from the perspective of someone else involved in the situation. This new poem may not reflect the truth, but sometimes it’s important to remind ourselves that everything has a flip side.

3 FORMAL POETRY: THE SESTINA A sestina is a form of poetry that uses a method of repeating words at the end of each line. It has 6 stanzas of 6 lines each, with an envoy (or tercet) of three lines to conclude the poem. The first six-line stanza should alternate the ending word of each line using the following pattern: Stanza 1. ABCDEF Stanza 2. FAEBDC Stanza 3. CFDABE Stanza 4. ECBFAD Stanza 5. DEACFB Stanza 6. BDFECA The seventh stanza should be three lines long and contain all six of the words from the list.
