2 Learning Goals To learn how to respond to challenges To learn how to be responsible for themselves and their experiences To be part of a community and look out for one another Stewardship- we are in a National Park and have responsibilities to look after the land

3 Overnight hikes All students will be involved in going out on a hike to some place on the Prom Hikes are of various lengths and degrees of difficulty Each hike is open to either 9 or 10 students (max). All hikes will have at least 2 adults (teacher and parent helpers) Hikes will be chosen by a team of teachers based on a few things – Level of challenge wanted – Level of fitness & training – Level of self responsibility

6 Equipment Hiking Pack – 55-75 Litres. Sleeping bag – 0° C min recommended (same as Yr 10 Centre Trip) Sleeping mat – Thermarest style or foam. Good socks and walking shoes – must be sturdy, support ankle and be worn in before camp. Aquatabs – water purification needed (MECS will provide) Warm clothing – polarfleece good in terms of warmth and being light weight. Sun-smart clothing (girls especially need polo style, collared tops or high neck) Insect Repellent Hiking Tent – to be shared between 2 or 3. Hiking Stove – to be shared between 2. Microfibre towel. Light canvas shoes for at hike location. Pillowslip Garbage bags

8 How and what to pack 3 Bags – Hiking pack with all hiking gear – Soft and compact bag for base camp gear – Small day pack for bus travel and day walks (including lunch for Monday) With hiking pack, keep weight low and as close to person’s back as possible. Make use of pockets etc and try to avoid having smaller items hanging on outside of pack.

10 Food Base Camp - all food provided Hikes – students to provide and carry all meals Food needs to be lightweight, nutritious, with minimum packaging

11 Breakfast Cereal with UHT or powdered milk (pre- measured) Fruit Breakfast bars with oats Belvita biscuits

12 Lunch Mountain bread Chicken and tuna pouches (Safcol) Dry crackers with favourite spreads Fruit buns Pizza rolls (Monday only) Muesli bars NB: Stoves cannot be used

13 Dinner Frozen spaghetti sauce with dry pasta (Monday night only) Packet meals supplemented with dehydrated/fresh vegetables – Tasty Bites: Bombay potatoes/ Madras Lentils Noodles, pasta, rice – e.g. Aldi /Uncle Bens brand

14 Snacks Trail mix: dried fruit, nuts, jelly beans, M & Ms (divided into separate snap lock bags for each day of hike) Dried fruit Sanitarium One Square Meal Muesli bars with oats / Mother Earth Oaty Slices

15 Training for hikes 2 Practice hikes at School Thursday 15 th October Monday 26 th October Hiking packs must be packed with items and lunch (to cook on the day) Total weight should be 15kg or 1/3 of weight Hat, sunscreen, whistle, 1L water bottle & MECS top mandatory At home: Encourage students to do weekend walks – 1000 steps in Ferntree Gully or Warburton trail are good examples Practice with hiking packs on and 15kg weight Do training in the hiking shoes that they will hike in

16 Timeline The rest of Term 3 and holidays for getting together key individual equipment – Hiking pack, sleeping bag, bed roll Term 4: – Week 1: Practice hike on Thurs 15 th Oct – Week 2- After the first practice hike, we plan to reveal the 6 groups Note: At this point shared items can be finalised Tent & hiking stove – Week 3: 2 nd and final practice hike on Mon 26 th Oct
