2 WP1.2 Budget LHCb UK Upgrade Management Meeting, Birmingham, 24.04.2015 Stephan Eisenhardt o Equipment budget stays as submitted: EquipmentFYFYFYFYFYFYtotal Description14/1515/1616/1717/1818/1919/20 (£k) RICH 10124124124124124620 photon detectors RICH 20133133133133133665 photon detectors

3 WP1.2 Milestones LHCb UK Upgrade Management Meeting, Birmingham, 24.04.2015 Stephan Eisenhardt o Nearly all milestones adjust due to following reasons: –change in official LHC schedule: Run 2 until ~Jun’18, Run 3 from Jan’20 –changes in availability of components: placement of photon detector order availability of CLARO readout chip –more realistic definition of programme: staggering of development of test facilities for CLARO, FEB and EC

4 WP1.2 Milestones LHCb UK Upgrade Management Meeting, Birmingham, 24.04.2015 Stephan Eisenhardt o Milestones: –WP1.2.1: Characterisation of photon detectors in the lab01/15 completed A: Photon Detectors qualified for TDR 12/13 completed B: Optimisation with front-end readout chip for EDRs 01/15 completed –WP1.2.2: Photon detector test facilities, fully qualify07/18 ~3200 MaPMTs, ~500 Flatpanel PMTs and spares A: Facilities fully commissioned ready to start production run 12/15 (was 06/15) B: Photon detector production testing starts 01/16 (was 06/15) C: Photon detector production testing completed 07/18 (was 09/17) –WP1.2.3: Fully assembled photon detector columns07/19 A: Start Elementary Cell assembly 10/16 (was 09/15) B: Start mounting Elementary Cells on columns 06/17 (was 06/16) C: Mounting Elementary Cells on columns completed 12/18 (was 12/17) D: Photon detectors commissioned in situ 07/19 (was 01/19) –WP1.2.4: Photon detector monitoring and calibration fully operational12/19 A: System ready for installation 12/18 (was 12/17)

5 WP1.2 Progress Report LHCb UK Upgrade Management Meeting, Birmingham, 24.04.2015 Stephan Eisenhardt The Hamamtsu R11265 MaPMT and H12700 Flatpanel PMT have been fully qualified for use in LHCb RICH by the working groups at Edinburgh and Milano. Qualification included gain variations within and across detectors, dependencies of gain and photon detection efficiency on magnetic fields and supply voltage, dark count rate and ageing. (completing milestone 1.2.1.A) The photon detectors have been operated in a test beam using a readout employing the penultimate submission of the CLARO readout chip. The photon detection efficiency of the setup was optimised and the light yields (preliminarily) determined. (completing milestone 1.2.1.B) Following the consolidation of the LHCb UK Upgrade grant, causing the Glasgow group to leave the effort, international partners have been won to share the load in photon detector testing, Elementary Cell (EC) assembly and testing. A new, more realistic work plan has been developed, incorporating the latest plans for the availability of the final version of the CLARO readout chip, the assembled front-end boards (FEB) and the respective test facilities for the CLARO, the FEB and the EC, as well as updated estimates for the testing times. (adjusting all milestones in 1.2.2, 1.2.3 and 1.2.4)

6 WP1.2 Partners LHCb UK Upgrade Management Meeting, Birmingham, 24.04.2015 Stephan Eisenhardt o International Collaborating Groups: –WP 1.2.2: Photon detector test facilities and quality assurance Padova, Italy: testing 50% of the photon detectors replacing the cut Glasgow group –WP 1.2.3: Photon detector module assembly Ferrara, Italy: providing Elementary Cell testing facility testing 50% of Elementary Cells using the photon detectors tested at Padova o Industrial Suppliers: –Hamamatsu, Japan: supplying photon detectors

7 WP1.2 Risk Registers LHCb UK Upgrade Management Meeting, Birmingham, 24.04.2015 Stephan Eisenhardt o In: –WP 1.2.2: RISKLIKELIHOODIMPACTDECISIONHOW TO MITIGATE IT 1 Development of photon detector test facilities delayed Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) redundancy in testing facilities, allows increase of testing rate; ultimately could use the datasheet values provided by Hamamatsu for photon detector selection 2 Delay in photon detector quality assurance programme Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) redundancy in testing facilities, allows increase of testing rate; ultimately could use the datasheet values provided by Hamamatsu for photon detector selection 3 Hamamatsu slipping in delivery schedule Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) redundancy in testing facilities, allows increase of testing rate; ultimately could use the datasheet values provided by Hamamatsu for photon detector selection 4 Hamamatsu going bust Rare (never happens)CatastrophicAcceptance large international company, with healthy base of customers 5 Currency fluctuations, funds not sufficiend for requred tubes Likely (50% probability)Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) Create a yen account (if it's OK to say that) 6 Development of CLARO test facilities delayed Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) using redundancy and Hamamatsu data as above, and diverting other manpower to support development 7 Development of FEB test facilities delayed Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) using redundancy and Hamamatsu data as above, and diverting other manpower to support development 8 Development of EC test facilities delayed Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) using redundancy and Hamamatsu data as above, and diverting other manpower to support development 9 Delay in CLARO chip production Possible (has already happened) Major Mitigation (fill in next field ) final version close to submission, all technical issues with penultimate chip version solved 10 Photon detector monitoring system delayed Possible (has already happened) Moderate Mitigation (fill in next field ) new system uses largely existing infrastructure, late development is possible or reuse of existing infrastructure
