2 LOCATION The Parthenon was built in Athens, Greece
Construction started in 447BC and ended in 432BC In 1687 the Parthenon was being used by the Turks as an arsenal – so it was full of barrels of gunpowder. The Venetians bombarded it with cannon fire, and BOOM! – the middle and the roof were blown up. That’s why it is in such a state today. The Greek government is doing what it can to restore the Parthenon, but this will take many more years to finish. LOCATION

3 Pericles ordered the building of the Parthenon
Pericles ordered the building of the Parthenon. Pheidias was the chief architect and the two architects under him were Callikrates and Ictinos. The Athenians had to rebuild the temple of Athena that had been ruined and wanted to celebrate the victory over the Persians, and to give thanks to Athena, who helped them win the battles. Temple to the goddess Athena and a treasury, where gold was stored in a room at the back of the temple. PURPOSE

Is a marvel of architecture. The designers made many corrections to make the building as beautiful as possible. EX. A long horizontal line seemed to sag in the middle, therefore the base of the building curved up slightly in the middle, so it didn’t seem to sag It took 15 years to build Built with high quality marble from Mt. Pentelicon. Some machinery was needed to put the very heavy stones into place. A crane was used and blocks had bits sticking out to be used for carrying UNIQUENESS
