Real World Math utah.agclassroom.org

Integration of Math & Science Inquiry based instruction (preferred science method) leads to enduring understandings and student achievement. Understanding math concepts is essential to students being able to answer scientific questions.

Math is a tool Questioning, through inquiry, provides the motivation for learning facts that will help to solve “real world” problems. Math facts are like phonograms in language. They are the building blocks for solving more complex equations. Real world problems evolve into questions which develop the equations that lead to calculations and possible solutions

Problem Solving Story Problems Prediction & Estimation Measurements (English/Metric) Weight Length Diameter Volume Temperature Time Money & decimals Fractions & Percentages Graphing Use the skills of: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Real World Examples from Agriculture Use the familiar things we use everyday to begin the inquiry leading to problem solving and math skill practice.

Agricultural Ideas Bees - measurement Pumpkins - prediction Wheat – estimation, statistics Rice - exponents Sunflower Seeds - fractions Pizza - time Popcorn – measurement (mass, volume & weight) Barns & Maps- measurement Weather - measurement Grocery Ads – money, decimals Food Packaging – measurement, percentages

Sum-up…Pun intended Some students need more repetition in the facts than others Inquiry/Story Problems allows higher order thinking Recognition vs. reward http://utah.agclassroom.org
