©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 3 The base of GS1 System  GS1 identification numbers: identification of traded units (GTIN), identification of logistics units (SSCC), identification of location (GLN), etc.  Application Identifiers: AI (00), AI (02), AI (10), etc. GLN GTIN SSCC

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 4 Bar codes – GS1 products standard and common use bar codes symbologies use for Automatic Identification of traded units, location, logistics units and assets GS1-128 ITF 2/5 EAN-13RSS

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 5 Introduction WHAT Harmonisation of European Logistic Labels (HELL) WHO 24 GS1 MO’s participating led by GS1 Poland + GS1 GO WHEN February 2005 – October 2006 WHY harmonization of the data content (AIs) and formats of GS1 logistic labels depending on type of logistic unit or logistic process among European users increase the correct use of GS1 standards on the basis of one clear guideline

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 6 Guidelines common definitions of standard and non-standard logistic units one common approach towards pallet types division: 4 types, 7 kinds and 12 examples of logistic units one mandatory AI (00) – Serial Shipping Container Code Standard logistic unit Non-standard logistic unit Homogeneous content (uniform) Ordered regularly Uniform content Ordered incidentally Uniform content Heterogeneous content (mix) Ordered regularly Mixed content Ordered incidentally Mixed content

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 7 Identification of logistic units Type of logistic unitMandatoryRecommended Standard homogeneous SSCC Trade unit: GTIN of logistic unit AI (01) Non trade unit: GTIN of the content AI (02) plus n o of contained units AI (37) Non standard homogenous SSCC GTIN of the content AI (02) plus n o of contained units AI (37) Standard heterogeneous SSCC Trade unit: GTIN of logistic unit AI (01) Non trade unit: Non standard heterogeneous SSCC –

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 9 Guidelines Standard homogeneous: SSCC with AI (00) - GTIN2 with leading “9” with AI (01)* - one of the measures:  net weight (kg) with AI (310n)  length (m) with AI (311n)  area (m 2 ) with AI (314n)  net volume (l) with AI (315n) or - GTIN1 with leading “9” with AI (02) - quantity of boxes with AI (37) - one of the measures:  net weight (kg) with AI (310n)  length (m) with AI (311n)  area (m 2 ) with AI (314n)  net volume (l) with AI (315n) - batch / lot number with AI (10) - one of the following dates if applicable:  production date with AI (11)  packaging date with AI (13)  best before date with AI (15)  expiry date with AI (17)

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 10 Label formats – A5 or A7

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 11 General rules for label generation Types of logistic labels Data elements on label Technical requirements for label generation Label verification FAQ’s Example of logistic units Recommended AI’s Glossary of terms GS1-128 GS1 standard check digit calculations Guidelines – content

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 12 Educational software web based tool – prepared by GS1 Austria (www.gs1-labelview.at) main assumptions: easy to use for members  similar to „GTIN / GLN Allocation Rules” YESNO decision tree  set of easy questions (answer: YES / NO) result for user  picture of logistic label that should appear in users’ practice final version – September 2006

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 13 Migration plan All GS1 MOs eliminate any divergences between national guidelines and European guidelines, place the new guidelines on websites of GS1 MOs. GS1 MOs together with GS1 Europe help will gain support from multinationals. GS1 MOs and GS1 Europe will get support from main players on a national level. GS1 Austria, GS1 Germany and GS1 Switzerland – update DACH documents to be compliant with the European guidelines.

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 14 Other issues Rapid Action Force – RAF: continuation of cooperation network of experts scope: correct barcoding and logistic labels implementation guidelines update communication – discussion forum and www (www.gs1pl.org/raf).

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 15 Our message A harmonized logistic label is possible and adopting a harmonized approach saves and!!!

©2006 GS1 ©2006 ILiM – GS1 Polska Polska 16 Next steps for the users The users should : get familiar with the guidelines check if their labels are compliant with the standard check if their traceability process requires additional data on a label check if their partners demand additional data on labels refer to their local GS1 MO for some help in case of any discrepancies.
