2 What Boys’ Club is An opportunity for second through sixth grade boys to expand their horizons within a comfortable environment via multiple positive male influences A place to reconcile real world issues through legitimate relationships providing wisdom from experience A place of encouragement outside of the home

3 Goals To let us as leaders: Be active with the boys Be mentors and try to impart wisdom Help them see “alternatives” Encourage them to think critically Let them talk and voice their thoughts Help them grow up in some healthy ways Have fun with them

4 Schedule Monday evenings 6-7 PM Hype-Session Instructor opens Recite memorized sayings and creed Outdoor games/activity (30-40mins) Pizza (or alternative dinner made by concerned mother) Time of discussion and mentoring

5 Standards & Purpose The Hype-Session prepares everyone for the lessons and activities for the day through dance Activity is structured as team and cooperative Nourishment for the body and mind Discussion and mentoring session at dinner

6 Materials Used Basketballs Footballs Music, CDs, and Stereo Play Area 3 Ring Binder Printouts of Discussion Topics Utensils for Dinner Time

7 Keeping the Boys Active To alleviate aggression and help them resolve personal conflict To provide with a physical outlet that does not glorify anger and emphasizes alternative ways of communicating frustrations in un-harmful ways

8 Physical Activities Basketball We had the kids play against each other as well as kids versus adults, passing, shooting, dribbling and other fundamentals of basketball. Relay races They did regular down and back sprinting relays and other running games

9 Physical Activities Cont’d KRUMP dancing is a hard-hitting, very expressive dance style that allows the boys to experience an active alternative art form

10 Dance The boys enjoyed participating in the dance sessions, whether they tried KRUMP or had their own style They performed for open houses and other school meetings We had opportunities to share with the parents our belief that art forms are great alternative activities

11 Example of Basketball Drill Basket Brigade Trust Game Start off with two teams lined up on each side of the basketball court Spaced out even distances to pass the ball from one end to another The last person in line shoots a free throw shot

12 Applying Teamwork We regularly practiced the basket ball drills and relay races to build up their skills in these areas Teach them to work as a team to achieve goals

13 The focus of the teaching was on providing the boys with positive male influences All activities where geared toward instilling a positive attitude and correct behavior Establishing Mentoring Relationships

14 Providing “Alternatives” The students do not often get to branch out of a usually-hectic life outside of home and school

15 Road Trip Road trip to Stanford Institute of Higher Learning Site seeing at San Francisco Cultural experience at Santa Cruz

16 Things to Improve Method of taking attendance Sign in sheet Leaders keeping a positive momentum Established rules and consequences

17 Ideas For The Future Multiple activity stations open simultaneously to allow more options to students Using smaller groups to provide more individualized instruction More trips
