2 Indiana is located in the Midwestern region of the United States. The weather is humid with cold winters and warm wet summers. It usually doesn’t get colder than 15° F in the winter or hotter than 90° F in the summer. Indiana was ranked 8 th in the top 20 tornado-prone states. The “Hoosier” State

3 Indiana State Capitol & Motto The Capitol of Indiana is Indianapolis. Largest city in Indiana, 12 th largest city in the U.S. “The Crossroads of America”

5 Indiana means “Land of the Indians”. The Indians played a big part in Indiana’s history. Paleo-Indians were the first people on Indiana land, after the Ice Age, they came to hunt Mastodons. Indiana State History Starting in 1679, French explorers and fur traders arrived. The Indians would guide and trade with them.

6 Indiana State History The British won the future Indiana land in the French and Indian War, then gave up claim after losing the American Revolutionary War. The U.S. made Indiana land part of the Northwest Territory, the Indians fought hard against U.S. control but states were formed. Indiana became the 19 th state on Dec. 11, 1816. Corydon was the capital, but in 1825 it was changed to Indianapolis.

7 Indiana State History During the Civil War, Indiana became the first western state to mobilize. Indiana provided many men for the Union, and was part of the Underground Railroad. Indiana recovered from the Great Depression during World War II, when Indiana became the 8 th ranking state in making military supplies.

8 James Danforth “Dan” Quayle 44 th Vice president of the United States, serving with President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1993. Born in Indianapolis. Received my law degree at Indiana University while serving in the Indiana Army National Guard. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives at age 29, and then became the youngest Senator from Indiana in 1980.

9 Indiana Sports Where high school basketball was born. More NBA players per capita than any other state. Indiana Pacers – NBA Indianapolis Colts – NFLIndianapolis Indians – Major League Baseball

10 The Indianapolis 500 The Indianapolis 500- Mile Race is an open- wheel automobile race held annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana over Memorial Day weekend and attracts over 250,000 people, making it the largest single day sporting event in the world.

11 The Indianapolis 500 The first Indy 500 was held May 30, 1911, won by Ray Harroun for $25,000. Top speed 75 mph. The 2014 Indy 500 was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay for $2.49 million. Top Speed 230 mph.

12 Soldiers and Sailors Monument First in the U.S. to be dedicated to the common soldier. The largest outdoor memorial. In 1902, it cost $598,318. In 2014 a similar structure would exceed $500 million. Took 13 years to build 1888- 1901, out of oolitic limestone from Owen County, Indiana. Stands 284 ft 6 in (15 ft shorter than the Statue of Liberty)
