Visual Literacy: Argument “Two Scoreboards” –Edward Koren View the visual argument. Analyze it like you would a written text. What subject is Koren depicting? Does Koren make a claim? If so, what is it? Do the words support the images or vice versa? What point is being made about the relationship between sports and academics? Do you agree? What does the American flag add to the impact of the cartoon?

Prediction… Consider the title of our next text: “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read.” Make a prediction (WRITE IT DOWN!) about what you think the text will be about. As you’re writing, please consider the allusion (“Caged Bird”) that is present in the title.

Maya Angelou—I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings “First published in 1970, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a ‘survivor’ memoir, a first-person narrative of victimization and recovery. Angelou transports us to her childhood in segregated Arkansas, where she was raised by her grandmother and was mostly content, despite the unpleasantness of her white neighbors, until, after a move to St. Louis, eight-year-old Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend.”

Make a Dialectical Journal NOTE-TAKING Quotations NOTE-MAKING Your responses, comments, or questions about the quotations you’ve selected.

HOMEWORK Read pages 89 through 91 of Francine Prose’s essay. Take a moment to realize why we are taking a day off…
