1 The Invention of the Frisbee By Graham Murtha Columbus Magnet School Congressional District 4 The Frisbee first started when the Frisbie baking company, from Bridgeport CT, sold pies to college students around New England. After eating, the students would toss their empty pie plates around. In 1948, Walter Fredrick Morrison noticed the students playing like this. His father had invented the headlight, so he decided to make his own invention inspired by the plates being tossed. He made the Pluto Platter, being named after the popularity of flying saucers. In 1955, The Wham-O company saw Freds design and bought it from him. They then called it the Frisbee, because most college students still called it that.

2 Why was this invention important? Frisbees became popular at the same time as the growing interest in flying saucers. The Frisbee was a pastime that lots of young people in the 50s liked to play. 4 How is this invention important for people today? An estimated two-million people play Frisbee golf today, and is an international sport played in 40 countries. Ultimate Frisbee is a very popular sport, with 4.9 million players in the US, and is an international sport that is played in more than 50 countries. Ultimate Frisbee is now an Olympic Sport. 5 How does the Frisbee affect me? Frisbee is my second favorite sport to play and I have a few more friends that play it too. We always keep a Frisbee in the back of our car.
