Counselor “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you”- vs. 19 Conformity vs. transformation= comfort vs. conviction

Counselor “Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also”- vs. 20 John 13:16- Assumes Christlikeness

Counselor When it comes to hatred of believers, the reason is as important as the action

Counselor Why are we not hated? Christlikeness? Christlikeness? American DNA? American DNA? God’s grace? God’s grace?

Counselor “They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin” No excuse- they heard the truth

Counselor “He who hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father” No excuse- they saw the truth authenticated by miracles

Counselor How do they hear truth and see it authenticated?

Counselor “He who hates me hates my Father as well” Jesus and the Father are a package deal. According to Jesus, I cannot reject one without rejecting the other

Counselor “But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason’”- vs. 21-25 They claim to be champions of God’s law, yet they hate the One their law points to as it’s fulfillment

Counselor Religion can justify almost anything. Those who follow Jesus are constrained to act as he would act

Counselor James (John’s Brother)- before beheading: “You’re sinful and destined for hell. You have one final chance to receive Jesus.” - Official came to know Christ and had his head cut off with James

Counselor John- boiled alive, he lived. Then exiled to Patmos before taken back to Roman society in old age

Counselor Mexico- Pastor’s kids kidnapped regularly. Ransomed or children are killed. Often the police are the kidnappers

Counselor India- yearly Hindu festival with sacrifices. 1 woman becomes demon-possessed, prophesy and dance for a week straight Pastor prayed, demon left, 24 people came to faith. Life is in jeopardy
