1. Where is the eye wash? Getting oriented to the room: 2. What does the fire blanket look like? Where is it? 3. Where is the fume hood? It protects you from __________
4
1. DO wear goggles 2. DO follow instructions 3. DO collaborate The 3 dos this season in chemistry:
5
The 4 th do this season in chemistry fashion: 4. When working with strong acids OR bases – DO wear gloves
6
Know lab procedures before you start. Perform ONLY assigned activities Tie back long hair NO horseplay Never point testtubes at a face Never smell chemicals directly … WAFT! NOTIFY NOTIFY NOTIFY
7
Read and double check labels Avoid contact with skin liquids = wash for 15 minutes solids = brush off and notify in eye = wash 15 minutes, do NOT remove contact When mixing an acid and water, always add the acid to the water
8
Turn gas off to turn off a burner After use, burners and hot plates should be unplugged Never look into a container that is being heated Never point testtubes at a face Never heat a closed container unless explicitly directed to do so
9
Cuts = wash immediately for 15 mins. Chemicals on skin: liquid = solid = Chemicals in the eye: wash 15 mins, do NOT remove contact Brush off and notify. liquid = wash immediately for 15 mins.
10
Burn Care (3 Cs) Control (flames), Cool (w/ H 2 O), Cover If you get stabbed NEVER pull it out!
11
1. What are the 3 dos in chemistry (use your notes from yesterday if necessary)? Day 4 8- 28

Safety Symbols DRAW the following symbols on page R50 in the back of the book: Eye Safety Flammability Corrosive Poison Fume
18
1. What are the 3 dos in chemistry class? 2. What is the fourth do? When do we do it? 3. What could we use to measure the volume of a liquid?
19
REVIEW What 3 ratings appear on chemical labels? What types of substances are corrosive?
20
REVIEW If a chemical is marked with the symbol to the left its health rating is most likely …?
21
Safety Symbols Review + remember the following symbols on page R50 in the book: Eye Safety Flammability Corrosive Poison Fume
22
1. Record the following definition: corrosive –highly reactive and causes damage to living tissue – strong acids and bases are corrosive 2. What are the three Cs of burn care? Day 5 9-2
24
Binder Book Parent info. Sheet SCAVENGER
25
1. What should you do if you feel like you might faint? – BE SPECIFIC!

1. Which piece of lab equipment can be used for a beaker cover or to evaporate liquid (use your equipment list)? Day 6 9-3
31
Day 1 9-4 Review what happened in the safety lab and try to identify the three unknowns (tell me what you can about them). Substance A (added to material) = ? Substance B (added to water) = ? Substance C (liquid added to egg) = ? Substance D (solid added to egg) =
32
Substance A: In the water: Liquid in the egg: Solid in the egg: Sulfuric Acid Potassium Hydrochloric Acid Sodium Hydroxide
