Change in Weight Lesson 11

In our last lesson we learned about the water cycle. Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Run off

Today we are going learn about how mass and weight are related.

How are mass and weight related?

Mass and weight are related but they are not the same. They are two measures for an object.

Mass is a physical characteristic of matter. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Different objects have different amounts of mass.

What is matter?

Weight is another physical property. Weight and mass are not the same thing. Weight is how hard gravity is pulling on an object.

While the mass of an object can stay constant depending where you measure it, it’s weight can change.

Weight is the pull of gravity on an object. The closer an object is to the center of gravity the more it is going to weigh.

Gravity is dependent on the size of an object. The bigger the object the greater the gravitational pull.

The weight of a person on Earth is much greater than the same person on the moon because the gravitational pull on the moon is much less.

We weigh only 1/6 th of our weight on the moon because the Moon is 1/6 th of the Earth’s size.

Even though the persons weight changes, the mass stays the same. Mass is not affected by gravitational pull.

Mass will not change unless you add more mass to an object or take more mass away.

Mass will remain the same whether we are on the moon, the Earth or anywhere.

The confusing thing is that when people talk about how much they weigh, they really are saying how much mass they have.

When someone says they have gained weight, they technically have gained mass. Mass of a person changes depending on what they eat or how much exercise they get.

Weight will change when the gravitational pull changes.

Mass is measured in Grams and Kilograms.

We measure weight by Newtons.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =-F5nmIJOF4U Let’s watch this video about mass and weight.

Let’s listen to this song about mass and weight. https://www.youtube.com/watc hv=1whMAIGNq7E&list=TL69zKYJ ui3JAhttps://www.youtube.com/watc hv=1whMAIGNq7E&list=TL69zKYJ ui3JA song

In our next lesson we will see how matter can be changed into different properties.

We will also learn to describe the different changes that take place in matter.

Good Job Today! And remember to….

See you next time!
