1 Today, November 4, 2014 EQ: What are the political, economic, religious and social structures of Medieval Japan? LO: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the vocabulary terms by taking notes, discussing the terms as a class, completing a detail flower organizer and will complete a think- pair- share with their partner to review the geography of Japan. 3 Japan Vocabulary

4 1.Clan – Extended families in Japan, live in villages, ruled by a chief. Clans ruled villages in early Japan. The head of a clan was a chief. Farmers and workers in villages had to respect and obey members of the clans.

5 2. Shinto –traditional religion of Japan. Everything in nature has a spirit (kami). The Japanese believed that some kami help people live and keep them from harm. Shrines were built to honor kami. Kami can refer to both nature spirits and to gods.

6 3. Prince Shotoku- ruler of Japan; sent scholars to China to learn about Confucianism; Spread Buddhism through Japan. Confucianism is good! It teaches people how to behave. Children, obey your parents. Younger siblings, obey older siblings.

7 4. Zen – a popular, new form of Buddhism. Wisdom comes from discipline and meditation. Zen Buddhism became very popular with warriors, who practiced meditation and self- discipline.

8 5. Shogun – a general who ruled Japan in the emperor’s name. The emperor was a “figurehead” with no real power  the Shogun held all the power The word “Shogun” comes from the Japanese word “seii taishogun” which means “great general who subdues eastern barbarians”

9 6. Daimyo – Japan’s large landowners; control large areas of Japan. Daimyo are also called lords, which mean they have power and authority.

10 7. Samurai – trained warriors hired by daimyo to protect their land. Each samurai served one specific daimyo

11 8. Bushido – Samurai code of rules. “The way of the warrior”. Samurai live & die by these rules: honor, respect, loyalty.

12 9. Tokugawa Ieyasu – Shogun of Japan whose family ruled Japan from 1603-1868. During this time Japan isolated itself from the rest of the world and banned guns.

13 10. Isolationism – A time when Japan closed its doors to the outside world. Banned guns. This extended the samurai period until the 1800’s. NO GUNS ALLOWED

14 11.Lady Murasaki Shikibu – Wrote the Tale of Genji around 1000. Story of people who fall in love from different social classes. Describes life in the royal court of Japan. NO GUNS ALLOWED
